IIRC this was done years ago in MDV on the theory that going to Documents was more newbie-friendly.  People raised hell about it and a patch was added so that if you had a hidden file of .mdk-no-desktop-launch in your home directory, terminals and file managers would revert to opening in $HOME.

I noticed some months back that Konsole had reverted to this, but I noticed that Edit Profile now has a field for default directory, so I just reset that and forgot about it.  

Maybe the original patch has been dropped ?

this was seems fixed with the pre beta3, closing, feel free to reopen if it's not the case for you
