Description Olivier Delaune 2012-08-28 16:14:11 CEST
Hello, someone on the mageialinux-online forum needs this perl package (http://www.mageialinux-online.org/forum/topic-13439+installation-de-pac-manager-module-perl-net-arp.php)

Could you add this perl package please?

module doesn't pass its tests. it has not been updated on cpan since 2009 and has some bug reports listing core dumps. there's a debian patch that doesn't apply cleanly.

so unless someone else wants to step in, it'll be a wontfix

nobody stepped in.

Closing as wontfix, feel free to reopen if you do not agree

It will be nice if I not have to compile perl-Net-ARP every OS reinstallation for PAC manager. It's very annoying that it's not in repository.

That was in 2012... maybe the module has been updated since then?

Assigning to the default assignee for package requests. Maybe someone is willing to look into it.

Last update was in 2013
http://cpansearch.perl.org/src/CRAZYDJ/Net-ARP-1.0.9/ARP.pm

Reassigning to our Perl maintainers. On a voluntary basis, one of them might, if there are no license or other legal issues, want to integrate it to the distribution and maintain it for bug and security fixes.

@ LudÄk, @ Olivier

You might also want to join the packager team to maintain this piece of software: see https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Becoming_a_Mageia_Packager

Jerome's commentary still applies despite the new release. The module seems to be of poor quality.

I still think that, there is bad MGA usage experience without this module.

We don't have anyone available who has time to patch Net-ARP so that it is good enough to be packaged for Mageia.

Feel free to reopen this report if you find a Perl developer who creates good patches (and attach those to this report), or if upstream releases a new version with bug fixes.

I feel uncomfortable about having closed a request as WONTFIX, what we mainly use for things that'll be wontfix _forever_, like importing software of which the license forbids us to redistribute it. I wish we had a NOTNOW or NOTYET resolution. (CC'ing LpSolit and Stormi for that)

Anyway, Luděk, you're part of Mageia, too, and apparently very motivated to see this module packaged.

What you could do, is contact a local group of Perl mongers near where you live, there are three of them in the Czech republic
https://www.pm.org/groups/europe.html
Maybe one of them is willing to help improve the module. Or you could learn Perl yourself, which is easier when you're a member of a PM group.

At the same time, you could become a Mageia packager and after graduation import and maintain perl-Net-ARP

If the above sounds appealing and this package request can be assigned to you, then please say so and try to reopen this report and assign it to yourself (we'll do that for you if you don't have the needed Bugzilla rights to reopen this report).

I should note that I maintain a site with recommended resources for learning Perl here: http://perl-begin.org/ , which you can peruse.
