Description Mike Arnautov 2012-08-25 00:16:52 CEST
After yesterday's update of kernel to 3.3.8 with Nvidia driver 295.71-1 the system booted but the X server failed to start. I used drakconf in the console mode to change the video driver to the imperfect Xorg Nouveau driver. Attempting to reinstall the Nvidia driver via the Control Centre results (when testing the correctly selected driver for my Geforce GT 220) in the following message:

> The result is a window with the following text:
>
> An error occurred:
> (EE) NVIDIA: Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module. Please check your
> (EE) NVIDIA: system's kernel log for additional error messages.
>
> Try to change some parameters

This is 100% reproducible.

I attach /var/log/Xorg.9.log

There are no error messages in log files within /var/log/kernel

Sorry, I meant there are no error messages in logs under /var/log/kernel time-stamped anywhere near the failure to load the module.

Comment 3 Mike Arnautov 2012-08-25 13:46:07 CEST
Further investigation shows that the 295.71-1 Nvidia driver builds without errors under kernel 3.3.6 but then fails to load just as it does under 3.3.8
Comment 4 Mike Arnautov 2012-08-25 21:30:18 CEST
Correct rebuilding of the Nvidia driver can be forced (as recommended by Doctor5000) by going to the console mode and entering commands:

urpme -a nvidia
urpmi dkms-nvidia

Followed by XFdrake to set the nvidia driver for display and a reboot.

Same problem over i586.

This message is a reminder that Mageia 2 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately one month from now Mageia will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Mageia 2. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX (EOL) if it remains open with a Mageia 'version' of '2'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Mageia version prior to Mageia 2's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Mageia 2 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia, you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version of Mageia.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.

Mageia 2 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on ''22 November''. Mageia 2 is no
longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or
bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Mageia
please feel free to click on "Version" change it against that version of Mageia
and reopen this bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
