Increasing the confusion is the fact that the descriptions, for Calligra & Calligra core are identical
I'm not sure how urpmi/rpmdrake detemines which packages do have a GUI. Is it done by searching for dsktop files? If yes, the desktop file should be moved from calligra-core to calligra package. If no, please tell me how it does determine it.

yes it use .desktop (as you can seen in the makefile posted above)
Can this bug be closed? rpmdrake in mga3 lists all the Calligra components individually under the 'Office sub sections' with GUI
