After logging in to lxde, there is just a screen with the desktop background. No panel, or menu. Alt+f2 does work, so I can run things. In ~/.xsession-errors the only line that looks relevant is Openbox-Message: Unable to find a valid menu file "/usr/share/lxde/openbox/menu.xml" The file does exist, and looks valid, as far as I can see. I've switched from lxdm to gdm, to see if that was the problem, but no difference. This is a clean install done using the nonfree-boot.iso under VirtualBox.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=644756 has a patch for a similar problem. I tried creating the symlink, but that doesn't fix the problem, so it may not be the same.
Created attachment 2600 [details] List of packages installed Something I've installed since reporting this has fixed the problem, but I'm not sure which one fixed it. I first noticed the panel and menu were there, after rebooting to select the server kernel. The attached list shows everything that's been installed since I reported it.
I can't reproduce. I just did a network installation with boot-nonfree.iso and everything was as it should be. I did an absoultely minimal installation in a qemu-kvm virtual machine without suggests and with only task-lxde and lxdm chosen as packages (including their dependancies). Can you reproduce on a fresh installation? If yes, please give me exact details about your installation.

Created attachment 2606 [details] report.bug.gz from new install duplicating the problem. Recreated the problem. During the install, I did a custom install of Mageia 2 i586. I unselected all package groups, except Console tools, Configuration, and LXDE desktop. During user management I unselected the xguest user in the advanced settings. In the summary, I went through all options except users, services, and proxies. In the bootloader config, I selected grub with text menu.
I've now realized the menu is there, but for some reason the virtualbox screen and window size don't match, so it's not visible unless the screen is resized, and then scrolled down. Strange, as I've selected the same size in all of the vb installations I've done, and only encountered the problem with Mageia 2 i586. So it looks like it's a VirtualBox problem, which may have been fixed in newer releases.

Yep VBox tends to do such things....
