Description Tolhildan Karker 2012-06-30 11:35:38 CEST
The stability and signal strenght of athk5 driver for my laptops wireless is bad if I compare to 3.2 kernel that Kubuntu 12.04. I have Kubuntu 12.04 on my usb and it is much faster internet connection and stable.

uname -r : 3.3.6-desktop586-2.mga2
lspci -nnn | grep Ethernet:
00:14.0 Bridge [0680]: nVidia Corporation MCP51 Ethernet Controller [10de:0269] (rev a3)
03:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x / AR542x Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) [168c:001c] (rev 01)
rfkill list all:
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no

I have tried disable IPv6 and also created /etc/modprobe.d/ath5k.conf. In ath5k.conf I did put options ath5k nohwcrypt=1. Did also not help. I will be really glad if we can have kernel 3.2 in Mageia 2 repo or newer kernel then 3.3.6. Now the internet speed is terrible. I hope this information is good enough. If you guys want I can look up which kernel version Kubuntu 12.04 have in there liveusb/livecd.

Thanks

Can you try the vanilla kernel aka kernel-linus to see if it's better ?

Exactly which package should I install? I do not want to make any thing wrong.
Comment 3 Tolhildan Karker 2012-06-30 21:01:26 CEST
The speed and stability is perfect with kernel-linus-3.3.6-1mga2 when I use the wifi. How can I know make kernel-linux-3.6.6-1mga2 work with nvidia drivers? Because it is now using nouveau instead. Do I need to install dkms-nvidia-current to make it work with kernel-linus-3.3.6-1mga2?
Comment 4 Tolhildan Karker 2012-06-30 23:12:13 CEST
Okey now I have made more tests. This is not a kernel related issue, of what I understand. When I use nouveau instead of nvidia drivers for both kernel-linus and kernel-desktop586 my wifi speed and stability is the same. It is good with other words. When I instead use nvidia drivers no matter which kernel of does the wifi speed/stability is bad. Should I make new bug topic with the latest nvidia kernel and my wifi speed/stability? Because I really want to use nvidia drivers and have good wifi speed/stability.

try a more updated linux (kernel and nvidia driver) like in cauldron maybe, and if you reproduce again you should open a bug upstream.

Summary: Wireless signal strength and stability of athk5 driver with kernel 3.3.6 => Wireless signal strength and stability of athk5 driver with kernel 3.3.6 and nvidia
Source RPM: (none) => nvidia-current

Comment 6 Tolhildan Karker 2012-07-01 14:41:05 CEST
Manuel Hiebel thanks. It works great with kernel 3.4.4 and the nvidia drivers from cauldron. I only needed to disable IPv6 and also created /etc/modprobe.d/ath5k.conf. In ath5k.conf I did put options ath5k nohwcrypt=1. Now everything works perfect.

Anssi, tmb, any ideas if backport patch is possible ? (if you know them of course)

Assigning to mageia nvidia packages maintainer. Anssi (and/or tmb), please tell us if there something that can be done in Mageia 2 regarding this issue involving kernel and nvidia drivers. If not, please close this bug report as WONTFIX.

This message is a reminder that Mageia 2 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately one month from now Mageia will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Mageia 2. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX (EOL) if it remains open with a Mageia 'version' of '2'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Mageia version prior to Mageia 2's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Mageia 2 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia, you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version of Mageia.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.

Mageia 2 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on ''22 November''. Mageia 2 is no
longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or
bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Mageia
please feel free to click on "Version" change it against that version of Mageia
and reopen this bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
