Description Dave Hodgins 2012-05-21 23:42:09 CEST
After a clean install using the final dvd iso, on the first
boot into kde4, kmix shows a blank document icon instead of
the speaker icon. Hovering the mouse over the icon, it shows
"No mixer found". After right clicking and selecting the master
channel, it's ok. Also after a reboot it's ok.

It looks to me like kmix is starting before something it needs
in this particular first boot. I've done a lot of installs in
the last few weeks, and this is the only time I've seen this
so far.

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja

@ Dave

Did you ever see it again, or was it just a one time thing?

I'm a bit reluctant to set this bug to MGA2TOO if it wasn't ever reproduced

It's sporadic. I've only seen it once in the last week, with over a dozen boots
into Mageia 2. Right clicking on the icon, selecting the mixer channel and setting
it back to the internal audio device corrects it.

I add also coling who has great experience with kmix and pulse audio, maybe we can understand what happened.

One question to reporter: does he have any other audio output channels? (graphic card, webcam, ...)

During this, what a ps aux | grep kmix returns ?
Comment 9 Colin Guthrie 2012-07-18 11:01:00 CEST
From the xsession errors, I can see this:

kmixctrl(5409)/kmix Mixer_PULSE::writeVolumeToHW: pa_context_set_sink_volume_by_index() failed

I think I fixed this a month or two back in upstream KDE, but can't remember if it's in our kmix package or not...

I'll cherry pick the fix to the 4.8 branch which is due an update soon IIRC.

That said, I cannot see how that would cause this kind of problem anyway, so I suspect it's a red herring concerning this particular problem.

To be honest kmix is such a mess it's kinda hard to know where the problem might be :s e.g. it could just be a window drawing problem. Next time it happens can you take some screenshots of each tab available (e.g. the Sinks, Source, Playback and Record stream tabs) just so I can see exactly what you mean. Cheers

Given how rarely it happens, there's no way to confirm whether
or not the update is actually fixing the problem.

I'll close the bug as fixed, and reopen if I see it again.
