Description Carolyn Rowse 2012-05-11 08:15:39 CEST
Description of problem:

RC booted and installed perfectly on my HP laptop, but I'm running into problems with my Fujitsu desktop computer (using the same CD). RC got much further than Beta 3 but still not quite there. This is with the KDE 32-bit edition.

With B3 I got an error message early in the boot process saying the display had to be re-started due to the graphics driver having been changed, but no indication of what change had been made, and then I got stuck in a reboot loop.

With RC I got a Nvidia splash picture instead, and then I thought it was going to continue perfectly, but it hung just before the desktop was fully loaded. It got to the fourth bubble on the cauldron, the big letter K remained a blur, the bottom panel appeared but then nothing more, no wallpaper or icons. The CD drive stopped whirring.

And yet it worked perfectly in a VirtualBox VM on the same computer!

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:

Attempt to boot into live CD.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot into existing distro
2. Insert CD
3. Reboot

does it work with "xdriver=nouveau"

Comment 3 Carolyn Rowse 2012-05-12 13:15:40 CEST
This is what I've been trying this morning:

xdriver=nouveau didn't make any difference at all.

radeon.modeset=0 got me one tantalising step further - got desktop icons but no wallpaper, only a black background.

Tried the GNOME edition and that was even worse - as soon as it tried to load the desktop it crashed completely, gave me a picture of a computer with a sad face on its screen and a message that an error had occurred that the system couldn't recover from and telling me to contact the system administrator.

Decided to try some other distros that I haven't tried on this computer yet - Kororaa 16, Mint 12 and Xubuntu 12.04 - and they all booted and loaded everything up fine without any intervention needed from me.

hum :(
and what is your exact graphic card ?
'lspcidrake -v' in a console

(also note that radeon is for ati card)
Comment 5 Carolyn Rowse 2012-05-12 21:01:45 CEST
I thought the reference to radeon seemed a bit strange.

This is the output of lspcidrake -v:

Perhaps I should mention that Mageia 1 runs perfectly on this computer - in fact, so well you'd think they were designed for each other!

Absolutely fine with the latest KDE i586 ISO - I'm using it now.
Many thanks.

Will try and test the GNOME one later on.
Comment 8 Carolyn Rowse 2012-05-20 09:47:41 CEST
Latest GNOME one is fine as well - am using it to type this. Thank you.

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja
