Description Andrew 2012-04-28 00:36:03 CEST
Nightingale is an Open Source alternative to iTunes complete with all the bells and whistles. It is a linux fork / revival of the now discontinued linux version of Songbird (which became Windows exclusive).

It's interface and features are much cleaner and more desirable - especially to migrators from Windows as well as iTunes, than the default Gnome and KDE media players (Rhythmbox & Amarok respectively)

I believe the addition of this application would make Mageia a more desirable distro to those looking to escape from Microsoft and Apple without the hassles of more technical distros.

In wikipedia I read:

Nightingale is entirely free software, licensed under the GPLv2, with portions under the MPL and BSD licenses.

Not being a packager, I just wonder how that should be put in a spec file.

@ Andrew,

Did we already ask you to become a Mageia packager?
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Becoming_a_Mageia_Packager

Becoming one is the best way to make sure your favourite software is added to Mageia :)

I appreciate the offer (and the info) but I don't have the time to get involved with packaging in the foreseeable future. Also, I know nothing about it either, plus it looks a little overwhelming to be honest...

I'm currently bug testing for several distros. That and personal affairs currently consume any free time I can spare at the moment.

Hi,

I also think nightingale it's a good program, it would be great to see it packaged for mageia.

I personally install it to my friends I have migrated to mageia and they loved it more than iTunes or any other linux program, I even install the ipod nano plugin I have modified so that can be installed in nightingale and it works fine.

Unfortunately the ipod nano plugin development has been stop by POTI INC.

I hope to see it soon in the packages.

Regards

Will it also be able to flash updates from Apple just like iTunes?

I believe that this should be implemented to this program:

Assigning this package request to all packagers collectively. On a voluntary basis, one of them might want to integrate it to the distribution and maintain it for bug and security fixes.

You might also want to join the packager team to maintain this piece of software: see https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Becoming_a_Mageia_Packager
