nothing when restarting the dm or in the tty1 or 2 ?

'service dm restart' hangs for 60 seconds, then brings the graphical logon tty1 (CTRL-ALT-F1) shows some error messages and tty2 (CTRL-ALT-F2) gives the graphical logon immediately

So is the problem just that the graphical login initialises on tty2 on boot?
it would seem so, but then, when I log in, I get an error message stating: 'Could not update ICEauthority file /home/bertl/.ICEauthority' [Log Out] will try a new install tomorrow and see how that goes ...
