After installing all Cauldron updates today, I noticed my pulseaudio volume control no longer runs. I get: "Connect to PulseAudio failed. Automatic retry in 5s" I also get an error when trying to launch "alsamixer" [andy@localhost ~]$ alsamixer Home directory /home/andy not ours. ALSA lib pulse.c:243:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Connection refused cannot open mixer: Connection refused I am not sure when these problems began. A few weeks ago both were working fine. Sound still plays in Skype and in web apps but cannot make adjustments, and cannot boost mic level.
>"Connect to PulseAudio failed. Automatic retry in 5s" where do you that ? >[andy@localhost ~]$ alsamixer >Home directory /home/andy not ours. This is strange, what show ll /home ? >ALSA lib pulse.c:243:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Connection >refused And with alsamixer -c0 ?

>> [andy@localhost ~]$ alsamixer >> Home directory /home/andy not ours. > This is strange, what show ll /home ? Okay, my home directory was somehow owned by root:root. Chowning it to andy:andy fixed this problem. As for how it got to belong to "root", I have no idea. Maybe I ran dolphin as root. If I'm going to do that (i.e., to browse my OS X partition) I usually do "su -" first so as not to mess with anything in my home dir. Thanks for the tip.
