Description of problem: "MATE is a fork of Gnome 2. It provides an intuitive and attractive desktop to Linux users using traditional metaphors." Gnome 3 has become a tablet interface which isn't really intuitive, so for those those who want a real traditional desktop, "Mate" is a good option. IMO after a decade or so of using gnome this is a real good option. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 1.2 http://mate-desktop.org/2012/04/16/mate-1-2-released/ How reproducible: Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.

since my request for mageia 3 feature went to scrap 'cause they do prefer cinnamon (gnome 3 without its shell), it's a waste of time to see this ahppening any time soon, gone to arch linux. Cheers

Well the thing is that the devs don't want to maintain mate because it is a clone of cinnamon. Look at features for mageia 3.
MATE is not a clone of cinnamon, you read that wrong. AFAIK the comment on the feature page refers to this: someone started packaging cinnamon and caused problems because the muffin package interfered with mutter (muffin is a fork of the mutter window manager from gnome). Apparently someone thought MATE would also suffer from such problems, but that is not true (anymore). MATE is now in fedora 18/17/16, it wouldn't be there if it interfered with gnome. I got MATE 1.5.x basics working using a few things from gnome3: - gnome-session - gnome-settings-daemon (and I want it to use the "old" libwnck) This means for example the font anti-aliasing settings in mate-control-center -> appearance don't work and I need to remove them from the UI. Not sure what happened to them in gnome3.
I'm trying to package Mate, based on Fedora RPMs. If all go well and after some testing i'll ask for Mate at devel mailing-list.

(In reply to Atilla ÃNTAÅ from comment #8) > I'm trying to package Mate, based on Fedora RPMs. If all go well and after > some testing i'll ask for Mate at devel mailing-list. this is a good news, after being denied as a feature request I was kinda disappointed in mageia. Thx Atilla for your hard work.
It's nice of you but too late to let MATE goes in cauldron. Mageia 3 will be release in two weeks so we only let security fixes now.
i did a long time ago https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Feature:Mate
As we are at two weeks of the offical release, It will be pushed for Mageia 4 I guess. Thanks for your work.
@Sandro https://wiki.mageia.org/en/FeatureMageia3_Review#Refused_features this was made early 2012 along my request. it's been quite a while since my last login in here.
The main problem is to have someone to maintain all MATE environnment. We can't import this and then let it without maintainers.
Hi Atilla, sorry for not replying to your mail on the dev list. I have basically the following packaged, still using some gnome stuff like gnome-session: libmatekbd libmateweather mate-applets mate-common mate-control-center mate-desktop mate-dialogs mate-doc-utils mate-file-manager mate-icon-theme mate-menus mate-notification-daemon mate-panel mate-sensors-applet mate-system-monitor mate-terminal mate-utils mate-window-manager also started on mate-power-manager but I don't have a notebook that runs mageia so hard to test. I put the src.rpms at http://www.time4t.net/~cjw/mageia/cauldron/SRPMS/ so you can take a look at them if you want.
Hi again. I know that it is too late for Mageia3. Again, if all goes well i'll ask for support at devel mailing list. You see, i'm a packager apprentice, if someone supports me i intend to maintain MATE, as long as Fedora or OpenSuse supports it. Based on those distros packages i think it is not hard to packaging MATE. Also, MATE is under heavy development and soon remaining problems get fixed. Thank you Christian Welvaart. I' ll look into your packages and i'm sure they will help me a lot. Please mail me to contact if you want to package MATE and give me a hand at tarakbumba at gmail dot com.
(In reply to Atilla ÃNTAÅ from comment #16) Packages ready for x86_64. All built in a clean chroot environment and signed by my personal gpg key. Only a few component remained unpackaged. I' ll try to provide i586 packages soon. Please see: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Feature:Mate https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=4867#p34094 Please test and feedback. After Mageia3 release and some testing and feedback, i'll ask for MATE at devs mailing list.
MATE is now in Cauldron. It will be in Mageia 4. Thanks. I'll close this bug.
