NOTE: It only comes as 32-bit so 64-bit editions of Mageia will need support for running 32-bit applications if not already present by default. I learned this the hard way with Fedora 16 and had to manually install support. This is my favorite cost-free office alternative so far, it handles long, advanced native Word documents MUCH better than the current version of OpenOffice and LibreOffice (which have corrupted my files in the past, especially when saved in native MSOffice format). Its spell and grammer check also doesn't crash in large documents like Libre does. To make things even nicer, its going to be completely free (in all senses) once it merges with Apache OpenOffice and becomes Apache OpenOffice IBM Edition. This wonderful office suite for whatever reason is not available in ANY distro's repo (including non-free and tainted equivlants) and should by all means be made available due to its enhanced stability with native MS Office docs as well as making cleaner conversions to Open Document formats.

(In reply to comment #1) > where are the sources ? this is an opensource product ? @ D Morgan Here http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/07/14/ibm_symphony_goes_to_asf/ I read: > On Wednesday, IBM said it will donate the standalone version of Lotus Symphony > to Apache's OpenOffice.org project under an Apache 2.0 license. So that would be this one http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0 @ Andrew Sorry, package requests are supposed to have "normal" priority. Leaving the "RPM Package:" field open because I don't know what the name of the package will be

yes but where are the sources ? i can't find them
(In reply to comment #3) > yes but where are the sources ? i can't find them They don't exist yet. On wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Lotus_Symphony I read: > IBM Lotus Symphony was discontinued in January 2012 with the final release of > version 3.0.1. > The source code was sponsored to the Apache Software Foundation to get merged > to OpenOffice.org which should be done in OpenOffice.org 4 and IBM plans to > release a 'Apache OpenOffice IBM Edition' after OpenOffice.org 4 is released and here http://www.openoffice.org/news/aoo34.html I read > Future Developments > Plans for future enhancements by the Project include support for additional > native languages, enhanced accessibility, usability and performance > improvements, and adopting new features and improvements from the upcoming > IBM Lotus Symphony contribution. So it'll take awhile before there'll be any sources. The package name will be openoffice-4? or aoo-4 or ...? Is there any chance the additions in the Apache OpenOffice IBM Edition will be open source, too? If not, this bug should be changed into a request for openoffice 4 or be closed as wontfix
@ Andrew I can't find that the IBM edition will be Open Source for the part that that version will differ from the Apache version. Therefore changing this into a request to package Apache Open Office 4.0 The rough target for release is end of 2012 https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+4.0+Feature+Planning That would be in time to get it in Mageia 3, if someone is available to package it. Next time please don't file your package request so long before the package is released. ;)
Summary: IBM Lotus Symphony 3.0.1 (Soon to become Apache OpenOffice IBM Edition) => apache open office 4.0 (with source code from IBM Lotus Symphony 3.0.1 )
The IBM edition will be open source as cited in Question 8 of IBM's "Symphony Apache Future FAQ" -> http://www-03.ibm.com/software/lotus/symphony/buzz.nsf/0/FDC7246494FF2FA38525799A0006B394/$file/Symphony%20Apache%20Future%20FAQ%2002-2012.pdf ---------- Q8. Will Apache OpenOffice the IBM Edition have a different license and be closed source or proprietary? A8. Apache OpenOffice the IBM Edition will include the same code and license as the Apache OpenOffice 4.0, which will be downloadable directly from the Apache website. The source code will also be available at no charge. IBM also plans on pre-packaging a set of extensions for the convenience of those clients that desire additional integration with other IBM products ---------- As for requesting so early, I apologize. At the time of the request, the release date was not known and I erroneously assumed that it would've been available in the near future.

I've seen Apache Open Office this weekend, and understood the only source code from IBM that was included, was the one for a side bar on the right.
which is included in LO 4.1 & 4.2

Should we close this bug as WONTFIX? It's already enough work to support one big office suite, and all Linux distros seem to give the priority to LibreOffice. We also have an history with the latter, the LibreOffice vs Apache OpenOffice situation being disturbingly similar to the Mageia vs OpenMandriva one. Let's put our resources into working on improving the community-based free software office suite :-)
