+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #5187 +++ Description of problem: Current mgaapplet stays in the Gnome Shell notification area. This is not an optimal place for it to be because it's invisible most of the time. Instead, the applet could be shown on the Gnome top panel. The status icon fixer extension could be a quick fix for this. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 2.77.32-1.mga2 How reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Log into Gnome Shell 2. When there are system updates available, a status message will be shown, but if you miss the message there is no indication of available updates visible any more. 3. Move mouse cursor to lower right 4. An icon literally labeled 'mgaapplet' is on the notification area.

Comment on attachment 1958 [details] Modified status icon extension The Status icon extension is available from https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/192/status-icon-fixer/ I've added lines for mgaapplet and net_applet. This puts them on the top panel, along with a number of other status icons from third-party apps. See attachment.

The status icon fixer extension no longer works with Gnome Shell 3.6, but instead the "Topicons" extension can be used.
Updating summary.
Summary: mgaapplet as Gnome Shell extension => Use TopIcons gnome shell extension by default for mga applets
Assigning to Mageia Tools maintainer group for decision.
