Description of problem: Current net_applet stays in the Gnome Shell notification area indefinitely. This is not an optimal place for it to be because it's invisible most of the time. Also, it doesn't provide any notifications at all. Compare this to Fedora where network manager is on the Gnome top panel. Mageia should implement the same behavior. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 1.5-1.mga2 How reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Log into Gnome Shell 2. Note that no network indication at all is visible 3. Move mouse cursor to lower right 4. An icon literally labeled 'net_applet' is on the notification are.

A quick solution could be to adapt the 'Status Icon Fixer' extension: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/192/status-icon-fixer/

I've added a patched shell extension that fixes this to bug 5206.

Hi, This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment. Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2. Thanks :) Cheers, marja

The status icon fixer extension no longer works with Gnome Shell 3.6, but instead the "Topicons" extension can be used.
Depends on #7317, the applet should be disabled completely if NetworkManager is responsible for the connection.

Remaining TopIcons extension request is now bug 5206, closing this bug as OLD.
