Description of problem:
VLC is crashing with all videos (sound files work). Unfortunately when I try to run it via gdb or strace, it doesn't crash. At the moment I don't know what other information could help you to identify the bug. Please, let me know if you have any idea.

This Heisenbug is strange. Can you try doing:

vlc --logfile "vlc.log" --logmode text --log-verbose 2147483647 [my_video_file]

And attach vlc.log here.

Hi Shlomi.

No vlc.log file is created. It probably crashes before it even open the logfile for writing.

Regards,
Jaromir.

I just tested that with PNG image ... the same result. Crashes when simply executed, but when I try strace, gdb or valgrind, the problem disappears.

Well, just to hopefully help us pinpoint the problem - does this crash also happen with gst123 or mplayer? If so, do they also work fine with strace, gdb and/or valgrind? Can you reproduce these crashes on a new UNIX user account?

For the record, VLC is working perfectly fine on both my x86-64 computers (these ones:

http://www.shlomifish.org/meta/FAQ/#computers-specs ). What is the SPEC of your machine?

Hi!

On IRC (on the #videolan channel) people suggested doing:

<funman> ulimit -c unlimited; vlc; gdb vlc core
<funman> also vlc -vv

Neither gst123 nor mplayer crashes in my case.
With new user VLC doesn't even open the main window and crashes immediately (vlc -vv terminal logs are attached for both users).
That thing with ulimit doesn't change anything.

Don't know if all the specs are relevant (probably just the VGA), but ... ok

Spec of my computer:
CPU : Intel Core2 Duo E6550 @ 2.33GHz
RAM : 4GB
HDD : 2x2TB ... software raid level 1
VGA : nVidia Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 430] (rev a1) ... driver : nouveau
LCD : 24" FujitsuSiemens (1920x1200)
SND : Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 03)
TV : LeadTek (Conexant Systems CX23880)
LAN : Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 01)

Seems to be solved since last update to KDE 4.8.2.

@Jaromir : does it still happen for you? Or can we close this bug?

Hi Shlomi.

It seems to work well now. But, can we trust that?

Well, I don't know if we can trust that, but unless the symptoms happen again (and we find a good way to diagnose them) I don't think there's a good reason to be worried about it.

So I'm closing this bug. Please file a new bug if you encounter further problems.
