Description of problem: Selecting rescue mode from the Alpha 3 iso DVD (i586) hangs after (or at the end of) installing its system, and before the choice of rescue actions is displayed 2 error message are displayed: Failed to open /dev/kmsg for logging: no such file or directory Failed to open /dev/shm for logging: no such file or directory Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: 100 % Steps to Reproduce: 1. Clean install of an Alpha 3 system (i586 ) 2. Boot and than shut down the newly installed system 3. Insert the iso DVD, boot and select "Rescue System" The rescue system starts to install, but then the 2 error messages (see above) appear, no way out Work around: do the rescue using a Mageia 1 iso DVD (if you have one) This situation is critical: if the install of Alpha-3 fails, it makes booting back into a properly working bootable partition difficult
I forgot to mention: might be related to bugzilla 441
Hi, thanks for reporting this bug. Assigned to the package maintainer. (Please set the status to 'assigned' if you are working on it)

Can you give the size anda date of the rescue you used (actually the install/stage2/rescue.sqfs file) eg: the output of "ls -l /wherever/is/mounted/the/mageia-livecd//install/stage2/rescue.sqfs" But since mga2a3 was released on January 12, 2012, I'm pretty sure you're using the old non working rescue which I fixed at end of January (see http://svnweb.mageia.org/soft/drakx/trunk/rescue/NEWS?view=markup) You'd better try this one: http://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/Mageia/distrib/cauldron/i586/install/stage2/rescue.sqfs

>> /wherever/is/mounted/the/mageia-livecd//install/stage2/rescue.sqfs" It is hard to get into that kernel and do the ls - once loading is launched I have no chance of an interaction - and the alt-Fxx keys dont help. From what you say the time invested to pursue this would very likely be lost. The reason why I filed that bug was to avoid having it burned into the Beta isos. Best approach now is: Wait for the beta iso and close the bug if things are OK there
The ls is meant as to do ony any system, just looking at the install DVD (not while installing!)
Sorry - I got confused by interpreting the term "mounted" the other way round. ls -l gives -r-xr-xr-x 1 harms harms 25137152 Jan 8 21:05 rescue.sqfs* - way back and before your fix.
