Description Y.LE_NY 2011-03-19 13:23:04 CET
Description of problem:

When you are installing Mageia 1 Alpha 2, the Mageia installer install firefox with several plugins, this is the list :
* For Java : IcedTea NPR Web Browser Plugin (using IcedTea6 1.9.5 (mageia-12.b20.2.mga1-i386))
* For Audio/Video : Windows Media Player Plug-in 10 (compatible; Totem)
* For Audio/Video : VLC Multimedia Plugin (compatible Totem 2.32.0)
* For DivX : DivX® Web Player
* For Video : QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6
* For Skype : Skype Buttons for Kopete

but there is no Flash plugin !

Then can you install a flash plugin by default when installing Mageia with the firefox or other web browsers.
Can you choose one free flash plugin and install it by default with Mageia 1 Beta 1 installation ?

There are 2 candidates :

* gnash-firefox-plugin-0.8.8-5.mga1
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnash

gnash is capable of reading up to SWF v9 files and opcodes, but primarily supports SWF v7, with better SWF v8 and v9 support under heavy development. With the 0.8.2 release, gnash includes initial parser support for SWF v8 and v9. Not all ActionScript 2 classes are implemented yet, but all of the most heavily used ones are. Many ActionScript 2 classes are partially implemented; there is support for all of the commonly used methods of each class.

or

* lightspark-mozilla-plugin-0.4.5.3-1.mga1
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightspark

Lightspark is a modern, free, open-source flash player implementation. Lightspark features:
* JIT compilation of Actionscript to native x86 bytecode using LLVM
* Hardware accelerated rendering using OpenGL Shaders (GLSL)
* Very good and robust support for current-generation Actionscript 3
* A new, clean, codebase exploiting multithreading and optimized for modern hardware. Designed from scratch after the official Flash documentation was released.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
gnash-firefox-plugin-0.8.8-5.mga1
lightspark-mozilla-plugin-0.4.5.3-1.mga1

No, this bug is not the same as bug 447 (rpm package missing in DVD)
and here in this ticket 449 (choose a default Flash free plugin for web browser).

Mageia dev team must :
1) Choose a default Flash free plugin for web browser that will be installed with Mageia.
1) Choose between gnash lightspark for this default Flash free plugin for web browser.
Note : Mandriva use Gnash for this default Flash free plugin for web browser
installed when Mandriva Free DVD is installed.

Ah, yes, you're right. (But still, lightspark suggests gnash :)).
Comment 5 Y.LE_NY 2011-04-30 22:45:23 CEST
Hello Samir,

There is no flash plugin for firefox and others web browsers installed by default in Mageia.
I have the problem with Mageia Beta 2.

Because the developper said :
"Lightspark is an OpenGL application and probably the software implementation does no support PBOs. It's also possible that it's simply extremely
slow, lightspark is tuned for modern (OpenGL 2.0) GPUs."
and
some users have a video driver that support only 2D,

I think that the best solution is to choose gnash as flash plugin in firefox and others web browsers by default in Mageia.
Comment 6 Y.LE_NY 2011-04-30 23:46:50 CEST
Anne,

Can you take a decision about this problem :
no flash plugin installed by default by Mageia DVD installer with web browser as firefox.

In a previous ticket :
2009.1 Alpha1 : no free flash plugin (gnash and swfdec) on DVD-ROM or in cooker FTP
swfdec plugin was installed as flash default plugin with Mandriva Free release.

Free plash plugin possibilities :
* swfdec : no update since 21 December 2008 (http://swfdec.freedesktop.org/download/swfdec/) -> not a good choice
* lightspark -> need a 3D driver with OpenGL2.0 support and ffmpeg compiled with x264 -> not a good choice
* gnash -> the best candidate.
Comment 7 Ahmad Samir 2011-05-01 00:23:06 CEST
If lightspark must "require" an ffmpeg built with h264 and AAC support then it definitely won't be on the DVD, which only contains free open source software. c.f. bug 447.

The same question I asked in bug 447 applies, does gnash or swfdec work reliably with at least a popular site like youtube? if they don't work, then installing them is useless, and actually would cause problems, as instead of the user getting a "Please install Adobe flash from foo" when he tries to play an online flash video, he'll be presented with either a blank black box or an error message (like lightspark).

Ok, no problems, I understand.

Yes I understand and more tickets for Mageia support.

On Mageia 1 Beta 2 DVD, I have only one flash plugin for Firefox that is gnash-firefox-plugin-0.8.9 in the core folder.
If I want to install Adobe flash plugin, then I need an internet connection to download the rpm package in the non-free folder in Mageia mirrors.

Then is-it possible to customize the user's firefox window with "Please install Adobe flash from foo" when he tries to play an online flash video by
"Please install Free flash Gnash plugin available on Mageia DVD for basic flash support or install proprietary Adobe flash from non-free Mageia repo or download it from Adobe website at http://get.adobe.com/fr/flashplayer/ (Adobe Flash is recommended for a full flash support)."

An other solution is to add non-free repo in Mageia DVD because it is only around 50MB.
Is there a problem to add this non-free repo in Mageia DVD ?

If it is not possible to customize the firefox window for Flash or to add non-free repo in Mageia DVD, then we need to add the previous text in this comment in the Mageia 1 release notes for the users.

We must not forget that somes users have no internet connection (it is the case in some countries in Africa) and then they must use only packages available on the Mageia DVD.

If you don't have an internet connection, how will you watch online flash content to begin with? :)

That's not a message displayed by firefox, actually displayed by the web site you're viewing the flash video from (make sure you have no flash plugins installed and try playing a youtube video).

No, the DVD only contains free open source software.

Then those users don't need a flash plugin, no internet connection -> no online flash content...

Was this solved in Mageia 1, or not?

I do remember needing to install flash player after installing Mageia 1 rc, but I don't remember needing to install flash player after installing Mageia 1 official, even though I installed Mageia 1 official at least 8 times.

@ Y.LE NY
please tell if you think this * wasn't * solved

As said on irc, be careful when you close a bug with the 'closeEOL' button.
(You should more use the No Response but it's not the topic ;) )

I have check the idx of the alpha and it seems there is no flash.

Assigned to ennael.

I would close this as WONTFIX.

Sadly enough gnash is just no alternative for flash-player. It's less performant then flash-player and on my netbook almost unusable.
Better not to provide a flash plugin and let the user decide, what he wants to use.

And with lightspark ?
Comment 19 Oliver Burger 2012-01-15 16:24:40 CET
The same. CPU usage is going up to >90% and you still can't really watch a youtube video.

I would opt for not including a flash plugin.
Comment 20 Anne Nicolas 2012-03-14 10:23:06 CET
So we don't have proper solution for free DVD. Closing then
