Description papoteur 2011-12-19 22:04:36 CET
Description of problem:
In the drak tools for configuring the videocard, I choose the "NVIDIA Geforce 2 MX...". The documentationn saaaaays that the installation of the proprietary driver should be propoosed. This is not the case, and I can not install the Nvidia's driver with this method

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
MGA2, alpha1

How reproducible: Install with the CD KDE-live

The solution is to install the driver with the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.20-pkg1.run
and the manual method.
Comment 1 Thierry Vignaud 2011-12-19 23:18:24 CET
Please _attach_ the output of the 'lspcidrake -v' command.
Also what's the output of 'rpm -q ldetect-lst' ?

Well, latest nvidia driver doesn't support your card.
Your card only work with an older version of the nvidia driver, the nvidia96xx
branch. However nVidia didn't release a nvidia96xx driver compatible with
current X11 server...
Thus we cannot make your card use the nvidia driver...
This is the issue with proprietary driver: vendors often don't maintain them...

Hi Thierry,
I'm not OK with your conclusion.
The last version of the driver is dated 2011.08.17, which is recent. This driver works fine for me.
It can be downloaded here : http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-ia32-96.43.20-driver.html
The release notes indicates :
Fixed a bug that caused freezes and crashes when resizing windows in KDE 4 with desktop effects enabled using X.Org X server version 1.10 or later.
Added support for X.Org xserver 1.10.

Thx

Read again and compare what nvidia says:
"Added support for X.Org xserver 1.10."
with what I'm saying: it's not compatible wit xserver-1.11

1.10 != 1.11 ...
Comment 6 papoteur 2012-11-11 21:18:10 CET
There is yet a new driver.

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.23-pkg1.run

I just tried it, but it is not working well. Some vertical or horizontal strips come according to the position of the mouse.
Comment 7 Thomas Backlund 2012-11-11 22:34:20 CET

Yeah, I have packaged it for mga2 in nonfree/updates_testing

it also needs ldetect-lst from mga2 core/updates_testing

Can you uninstall the nVidia*.run package, and try the ones in testing...

How can I uninstall the already installed nVidia ?
Comment 9 papoteur 2012-11-17 13:50:01 CET
Ok, I just tested the driver packaged in Mageia 2 testing.
The test is not positive.
- the resolution is not the optimal resolution, 1024 large instead of 1440.
- some zones in the screen are mixed. I join a screenshot.

This message is a reminder that Mageia 2 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately one month from now Mageia will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Mageia 2. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX (EOL) if it remains open with a Mageia 'version' of '2'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Mageia version prior to Mageia 2's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Mageia 2 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia, you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version of Mageia.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.

Mageia 2 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on ''22 November''. Mageia 2 is no
longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or
bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Mageia
please feel free to click on "Version" change it against that version of Mageia
and reopen this bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
