Description Christian Lohmaier 2011-12-17 20:53:40 CET
GNOME Europe1 alpha2 live iso

Description of problem:
try to setup a wireless connection using network manager.
* nm doesn't allow you to configure the settings prior to connecting (bad design, but well)
* the password-dialog is modal (again bad design, as you cannot lookup the password from the keystore on a usb-stick/from your own account, etc, you have to copy and paste it prior to attempting to connect)
* even after the connection is established, and the "configure" button is displayed, clicking onto that button does nothing.

In .xsession-errors the cause is printed:
network-cc-panel-WARNING **: Failed to launch nm-connection-editor: Kindprozess »nm-connection-editor« konnte nicht ausgeführt werden (Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden)

â child-process could not be executed (file or directory not found)

The package containing nm-connection-editor should be part of the ISO.

networkmanager-applet should be pulled by gnome-control-center, if it is needed by one of its panels.

65 # (wally) drop req for nm-applet as nm currently breaks wireless networking
66 #Requires: networkmanager-applet

is that still valid ?

Not sure (as currently I don't have any gnome machine with WLAN), but maybe the OP could test this?!
Comment 5 Olav Vitters 2012-01-14 13:53:54 CET
Per discussion between me + wally, we'll reenable networkmanager dependency and see if we get any complaints/bugreports/issues.

I've seen bugs advocating NM and against...

This is bogus.
g-c-c requires an applet it doesn't use just because of a network tool.
nm-connection-editor should be splited in another sub packages instead.

Comment 8 Olav Vitters 2012-03-22 14:44:36 CET
1. In GNOME 3.6 or 3.8 the requirement will be removed
2. /usr/bin/nm-applet and /usr/bin/nm-connection-editor share the same translation files, .ui files, images, etc.

I think to avoid any bugs (because almost everything is shared and hard to verify what can be split), you'd maybe save 300KB or so (the command + autostart file). It is not even an applet btw, just something for the notification tray.

If you mean something else please say so. "bogus": blergh.

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja
