We have both 32-bit and 64-bit wine-gecko packages, and I have the appropriate one installed. However, whenever wine initializes a .wine directory, it shows a dialog saying that it can't find wine-gecko, and do I want to download it from the internet although it is preferable to use the package from my distro. To reproduce, just delete or rename your .wine directory, and do something like wineconsole cmd According to http://wiki.winehq.org/Gecko , wine-gecko is putting the .msi file in the right place (/usr/share/wine/gecko), but I suspect that it is not being found because it is backlevelled (1.3), while the wiki page mentions 1.4.
As I suspected, if I rename the /usr/share/wine/gecko files from 1.3 to 1.4, the prompt does not appear. Of course, it doesn't work, either: wine: created the configuration directory '/home/ftg/.wine' WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to: /tmp/keyring-OoVPj4/pkcs11: No such file or directory WARNING: gnome-keyring:: couldn't connect to: /tmp/keyring-OoVPj4/pkcs11: No such file or directory fixme:storage:create_storagefile Storage share mode not implemented. err:mscoree:LoadLibraryShim error reading registry key for installroot err:mscoree:LoadLibraryShim error reading registry key for installroot err:mscoree:LoadLibraryShim error reading registry key for installroot err:mscoree:LoadLibraryShim error reading registry key for installroot err:mscoree:LoadLibraryShim error reading registry key for installroot err:mscoree:LoadLibraryShim error reading registry key for installroot Could not load wine-gecko. HTML rendering will be disabled. So wine-gecko needs to be upgraded.
