/!\ ** Systematic bug found ** /!\

When restoring from hibernation, on this system GRUB defaults to backport kernel
(kernel-stable-testing-desktop586-6.18.26-1.stabletesting.mga9),
and that results a few seconds into the boot in a reboot and *session lost!*

Workaround: I need to manually in grub select linus 6.6.137-1 when restoring, then it works perfectly.

Also backport kernel resumes perfectly if it was that one that was suspended.
I have not tried restoring a suspended session with 6.18 kernel with a 6.6 kernel.

This is something we need to address in a separate bug
 - but lets ship the kernels fist.
And note in our wiki page about backport kernel and maybe in errata.

Have we only been lucky before?
I know i have some times deliberately selected or let it boot different flavours when restoring contra the flavour that was suspending, and after restore, uname -a report the kernel that was used before hibernation, not the one last booted.

It seems we need to either make it resilient to boot different kernels for restore, or convince grub to after hibernation boot same kernel as the last one.
Comment 6 Giuseppe Ghibò 2026-05-05 01:00:28 CEST
Is this a new issue that doesn't happen when you switch back to the previous kernel?

Usually, GRUB defaults to the entry in /etc/default/grub, specifically the line:

GRUB_DEFAULT=saved

This boots generally to the value pointed to by the content of the file /boot/grub2/grubenv.
Comment 7 Morgan Leijström 2026-05-05 09:59:41 CEST
(In reply to Giuseppe Ghibò from comment #6)

Lets move out this problem to
Bug 35469 - restore from hibernation reboots, session lost, when grub default to wrong kernel

I think linus 6.6.137-1.mga9 is ready to go.
