OK x86_64 desktop on Thinkpad T510, Plasma X11, nouveau

Filesystems: separate /boot, then LVM for /, /home, swap.

__OK:
Surfing with Firefox watching video on internet over wifi
LibreOffice, etc.. syncthing binary
suspend-resume
hibernate-restore - as usual on this machine I have to hold power button to shut off when power lamp start blinking fast when hibernated.

OK: suspend-resume

hibernate works but fail to shut off power, instead blinks lamp and user need to hold power button to power off. (like all previus kernels for long time, maybe need nvidia binary blob)
Restoring session works perfectly.

mga9-64 6.6.120-1 all flavours: desktop, server and linus
OK on my workstation svarten:
 i7 870, AMD Navi 24 [Radeon RX 6400], Plasma X11.

__Filesystems
/boot: ext4
in LVM using a LUKS encrypted pv: / ext4, /home ext4, swap, swap2
big rust drive: plain ext4

__Clean update
using drakrpm, filtered on updates, testing repo enabled as updates

vt-switching: OK
suspend-resume: OK
hibernate-restore: OK *)

*) One problem on this system is sluggishness after restore. No wi only see it with desktop flavour. This is not new for this kernel, so no regression, lets not hold it. Also, this is the only one of my several systems where i see this.

---

Running various desktop apps like Libreoffice, Thunderbird, Firefox, Gkrellm, Gwenview, Hexchat, java app FriBOK, flatpak (Chromium, Signal), Nextcloud client Appimage, Dropbox (native), Syncthing (native)...

VirtualBox 7.1.14 host using locally dkms built kmod on linus kernel, pre-built kmod binary on server kernel, both tested on desktop kernel.
With with Guest Windows 7:
Tested dynamic window resizing, full size window, USB 2 flash disk, host folder sharing write protected and not, bidirectional clipboard, drag file from Dolphin to Explorer, Internet video in Firefox, Windows update (on fist test)(antivirus)

But the CPU is really slowing down, or does the desktop just feel sluggish in responsiveness (like for instance when a system is short on free RAM and starts swapping)? For example, does a simple CPU benchmark like "7z b" run slowly? Or a simple graphics benchmark like "vblank_mode=0 glxspheres64" does run slowly?

According to gkrellm, CPU and disk load is very low - i think lower than when it operates normally. - Like it do not realise i try to make it do something...

Mouse pointer moves like it should, but clicking a tab in firefox can take ten seconds until it switches to even start displaying that tab. Also switching to other applications takes time. Strange is that if i keep on workign writing in some app for some minutes and then use Firefox, it is OK again.
- Like me waking up slowly after too short sleep after 24 hours work and... before coffee ZZZ..., slowly getting up to speed...

I only see this on my workstation. The only machine i have where i have Virtualbox and somewhat recent AMD GPU, and more RAM then others, my only stationary in use. And only with desktop kernel versions for soon a year - not before, and not with server or linus kernel. Did not see this with 6.12 desktop backport, but saw it with 6.18 backport desktop, again not server flavour.

Some odd corner thing, obviously very rare. We should not let it hold this.

- audio/video works
- battery life seems normal

@Morgan - yeah, I need my coffee too. But only improve me a little. What's your power/performance settings for plugged in set at? Does shifting to performance improve things? And warm the room up? ;0)

Comment 19 Thomas Andrews 2026-01-22 13:34:15 CET
almost forgot...

Suspend/resume by closing and opening the lid on the above Pavilion works, as it always does.

Hibernate/restore has never worked with this laptop and Mageia. I believe it has something to do with the way I have the machine configured, with two installs using rEFInd as the bootloader, but that's only a guess. It's not something I need, so I just get along with it.

It should NOT hold this update back.

I forgot we also have desktop586 for 32 bit.

Now tested that too incl suspend and resume, no problems noted.
