This is a fresh continuation of Bug 34545, which became far too long. History: Already from august we have had the first usable backport kernels in testing, then 6.12 series. Compatibility have improved, also with updates of related packages. One related update left to test: nvidia470 At time of writing we have in backport testing kernel-stable-testing-6.18.3-2 in desktop and server flavour all arches. As our blog post 6/1 already told we have a backport 6.18 it is urgent to ship it. Giuseppe, should we hit this 6.18.3-2 with lots of tests, or will there soon be another?
> Giuseppe, should we hit this 6.18.3-2 with lots of tests, or will there soon > be another? There will be a 6.18.4-1 stricly in sync with cauldron (but changes are tiny).

OK so we try to QA 6.18.4-1 ASAP Please set this bug to QA when it is ready. We need a files list for it then also ASAP. nvidia470 updated to compile with kernel 6.18: Bug 34961, is to test and ship now. I assume we do not go further with 6.12. Advisory we use not to do for backports? We already have info in Wiki in place https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Kernel_flavours#Backport_kernels https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Persistent_live_systems#Backport_kernel

For 6.12.63+. there isn't yet the package. Let's see with 6.18.x then we'll see for 6.12.x (we might re-use the older 34545 or open a new one). ...and to get that field to enter an email in, set flag to ? Entering an address will send mail to that person - meaning a request for feedback on that. It is OK to leave the field blank. Flags are nice :-) > > CC:ing our wiki guru > > s/wiki/bugzilla/. Doh, more and more my hands write different things than i intend... At least i got the right person :)
I tend to not trust browser autocompletion, mainly because you don’t know where it comes from, whether the browser cache, which also means a previous mistyping...
I agree on browser autocompleting - but this is server side :-)
(In reply to Giuseppe Ghibò from comment #18) > I tend to not trust browser autocompletion It's not browser autocompletion. The suggestion list is generated by Bugzilla. Once you start typing three or more characters, it starts querying the DB.
Yes, however it “appears” as browser autocompletion, because browsers tend to cache data entered in any form in the past, which explains the feeling. A pull‑down menu aid, though less elegant, is probably more immediate.

It's not that difficult nor complicate. The series had to be duplicated after the release because otherwise you get in /lib/modules/ the filenames overlapping between each series, because filename just starts with version.

This will preload nvidia in initramfs and also avoid race conditions (if any) with sddm or wayland when they start too fast before the nvidia modules are loaded. As side effect you have to remember to remove it manually when switching to other drivers, as drakx11 is not "aware" of it. The nokmsboot option (though still written in cmdline by drakx utils somewhere, has no effect anymore since its support has been removed in kernel since kernel-6.2.1, during mga9 dev cycle).

Problems like on Hermanś machine is already at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Kernel_flavours#Backport_incompatibilities I have now added to "See also" of this bug: Bug 34973 - Wrong selection of kernel-devel packages, running kernel 6.18 That and the other "See also" bug Bug 34952 - Userspace tools for kernel 6.18 update I have now added those two "see also" bug to the wiki page @ #Backport_incompatibilities We can release without those problems fixed, thus not making this bug depend on them.

Thank you TJ :-) I think this can go now. I don't think we need to test it running as VirtualBox guest. Backport kernel have been in the works since august... Thank you all for fixing and testing various stuff!

Yes, but consider that it's a backport and not the official, which is still based on 6.6. It remained out the broadcom-wl, but we don't know yet if the vevrsion with fixes for 6.18 is working properly or not in cauldron (i.e. it builds but it's not working, but could also not work for other cauldron reasons, other than kernel). So for the moment I think that's all.
I will add a note on broadcom-wl Bug 33821 in the wiki depending on how that proceeds. Bug 34952 and Bug 34973 are already noted, and the issue on Hermans machine. We should not hold this back any longer.
(In reply to Morgan Leijström from comment #56) > I will add a note on broadcom-wl Bug 33821 in the wiki depending on how that > proceeds. Is this the same problem? Bug 34975 - The kernel does not build the Broadcom module correctly.

BTW, please delete the other 6.18 kernels from backport testing. I suggest to keep 6.12.60 kernel in backport testing for now. It is getting old security wise, but handy for those who like to test it where 6.18 is not compatible for them. - We may advance the version later, see Bug 34545 comment 195.

Move. Thank you for asking. We have not tested them AFAIK, but they are expected to be OK. We usually do not test for those arches. Lack of manpower.
