Version: 1 => Cauldron
Please attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log (copying it before restarting X, or /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old after reconfiguring and restarting X)

Created attachment 1120 [details] Xorg.0.log
I've reproduced it with WindowMaker too: 1. install minimal system 2. task-x11 3. WindowMaker startwindowmaker produces: /usr/bin/xsetroot: unable to open display '' /usr/bin/wmaker(real_main(main.c:768)): fatal error: could not open display ""
And startx runs WindowMaker correctly.
Seems valid in Mga2 Alpha2
IIRC it's more a wrong config for your graphic cards.
Summary: startgnome and startgnomeclassic don't work => start** don't work
I've installed KDE from DVD Mga2_Alpha2. After getting into console (return causes restart of X) and then trying to start X Window Manager by "start*" like startscrotwm there is the same no-effect. I have to run it by "startx"
xinit /path/to/x/window/manager is working
I don't have the slightest idea which package to assign this to

start* were never intended to work this way. This is the way it works: startx startXXXX eg: to start a second session: startx startxfce4 -- :1
