No installation issues.
Shutdown after installation and cold restart.
Wifi, internet, access to NFS-shares, video (with sound), different LO types, run glmark2. all works OK.

No issues that I can see. graphics, wifi both work normally. I have never looked into using the camera, so I don't know about that one.

MGA9-64, Cinnamon, i7 M620, nvidia GT218M (Nouveau), laptop

The following 5 packages are going to be installed:

- cpupower-6.6.92-1.mga9.x86_64
- kernel-desktop-6.6.92-1.mga9.x86_64
- kernel-desktop-latest-6.6.92-1.mga9.x86_64
- kernel-userspace-headers-6.6.92-1.mga9.x86_64
- lib64bpf1-6.6.92-1.mga9.x86_64

99MB of additional disk space will be used.

I have a regression. After update Cinnamon desktop will not display after login. I am able to get in via ldme (whatever failback is). Will attach journal.

After installing patch nouveau would not render screen for Cinnamon desktop. I tried software rendering and that didn't work either. Attaching Journal.

That seems due to nouveau usage on GT218M which is pretty unstable on its own. One of the many problems is that it's misseing the firwmware which should be extracted manually from ancient drivers and placed in /lib/firmware/nouveau. Morgan started adding some doc here about how to add the missed firmware manually: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Setup_the_graphical_server#Missing_firmware
Comment 22 Giuseppe Ghibò 2025-05-27 15:39:05 CEST
In fact from logs you get:

nouveau 0000:01:00.0: Direct firmware load for nouveau/nva8_fuc084 failed with error -2
nouveau 0000:01:00.0: Direct firmware load for nouveau/nva8_fuc084d failed with error -2

You should extract that files with the tools listed in URL above and add to /lib/firmware/nouveau/
Comment 23 Brian Rockwell 2025-05-27 16:38:37 CEST
came back and applied the firmware.

Added the following:
The following 5 packages are going to be installed:

- kernel-firmware-20250509-1.mga9.noarch
- kernel-firmware-nonfree-20250509-1.mga9.nonfree.noarch
- ralink-firmware-20250509-1.mga9.nonfree.noarch
- rtlwifi-firmware-20250509-1.mga9.nonfree.noarch
- wireless-regdb-20250220-1.mga9.noarch

228MB of additional disk space will be used.

rebooted

That didn't fix it. I'll have to look at the more invasive as listed above.

I'm going to drop the feedback for now.

what fascinates me is that software rendering option should have worked regardless of driver. Wondering if something else on box got corrupted.

Perhaps I get the issue of remove current kernel, not sure but I have to install
kernel-linus and kernel-linud-devel instead of update

That's related to the older kernel, which probably was removed so it won't find such module. I wouldn't mind at the moment.

mga9-64 regression, hang with black screen then video off on restore from hibernation, need to ctrl-del-del, ctrl-bksp-bksp. Strange REISUB did not work, or it was really slow.

So both -desktop and -server fail? Did you get anything like that before? And what other flavour such as -linus?

Just to know, does this bug report https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2950 match or is close to your issue?

one of the latest comments upstreams says it's caused by PSR (Panel Self Refresh) which was enabled at some point. You might try disabing at boot with adding "amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10"
Comment 42 Morgan Leijström 2025-05-30 22:46:52 CEST
First flavour i tried was server: this fail i described; black screen after hibernate-resume.
Tried also to update mesa(tainted) to testing version mesa-25.0.6-5.mga9.tainted.x86_64 and tested desktop flavour: same.

Last lines from journal at that fail:
maj 30 22:28:03 svarten.tribun kernel: amdgpu 0000:09:00.0: [drm] *ERROR* flip_done timed out
maj 30 22:28:03 svarten.tribun kernel: amdgpu 0000:09:00.0: [drm] *ERROR* [CONNECTOR:67:DP-1] commit wait timed out

maj 30 22:28:03 svarten.tribun kernel: Emergency Sync complete
maj 30 22:28:06 svarten.tribun kernel: sysrq: Emergency Remount R/O
- so REISUB do work, i just need to give steps E & I a lot of time.

Now i am on to try linus flavour, then your "amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10"
First i noticed network did not come up, but it was my old ethernet switch that decided to die last hour. Ha!

When testing i stress it extra by letting firefox be playing a video while i click plasma menu item for hibernation.
(Because there was a couple months ago a problem when i did so on one of my laptops, later fixed.)
Comment 43 Morgan Leijström 2025-05-31 00:20:22 CEST
Linus kernel have same problem, with or without "amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10".

With "amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10" desktop flavour did not boot to login.
Did not test server flavour.

Reference test: previous kernel kernel-desktop-6.6.88-3.mga9 do not have this problem, same test procedure, while all 6.6.92-1 kernels fail every time.

This seems hitting only your ASRock motherboard with RX6400, while on other AMD gpus (including those integrated) seems stable. From inxi you are using the amdgpu driver on Xorg; what if you switch to modesetting? Does the same occurs with wayland?

If you are not using any dkms modules, you might want to quickly try also one of the many mga10 kernels (kernel-6.12.30|kernel-stable-6.12.31, kernel-stablewnew-6.14.8, kernel-mainline-6.15.0, just the -desktop RPM without the -devel), they are in the old versioning scheme, so won't interfere, and are pretty easy to install|uninstall.

Also there are two other similar reports upstream here:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/4141
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/4197

A 6.6.92-desktop-2.mga9 is in the build in backports-testing,; currently it includes a series of patches for amdgpu, and it's pretty close to 6.6.93. Please test it once build is completed, and if it works we would skip 6.6.92 and go for a 6.6.93. Note that it's in the namingversion scheme, so it would install smoother but should be installed from rpmdrake or with urpmi but with full pkgname.

Iĺl try -2 desktop kernel.

If that do not work, maybe kernel from cauldron.
Is there a plan on a newer kernel generation for mga9?

Build completed, but you have to enable backports testing repo, then install with full name like 'urpmi kernel-desktop-6.6.92-2.mga9'.

>
> If that do not work, maybe kernel from cauldron.
> Is there a plan on a newer kernel generation for mga9?

the idea is to switch to (old) versioned naming scheme also for mga9, like already on cauldron. As for new gen, not in the immediate, maybe a kernel-stable-6.12 in backports (in 1 flavour and 1 arch only).

The other problem is the mesa 25.0.x EOL.

SUCCESS!

6.6.92-desktop-2.mga9 do not hang on restore from hibernation on my workstation, Several tries no fail, while all three 6.6.92-*-1 kernels hang always.

This is with x11-driver-video-amdgpu-23.0.0-3.mga9 from testing.
Now i downgrade that driver to try our released -2 version, back after dinner.
Comment 52 Giuseppe Ghibò 2025-05-31 21:41:39 CEST
That's good news!

We'll move then to 6.6.93 (once released).
Comment 53 Morgan Leijström 2025-05-31 22:46:55 CEST
It also works on my workstation with our released x11-driver-video-amdgpu-23.0.0-2.mga9.

Should we open a bug to QA and update x11-driver-video-amdgpu-23.0.0-3.mga9?

---

This bug is so long, I think we should open a fresh for kernels 6.6.93!
Then close this as wontfix.
Same for linus kernel.

I was going to wait on this one for the next kernel offering, but then I realized that the firmware updates should be tested, anyway.

No installation issues. No new issues after the reboot, either. Hibernate/restore works as it should. Suspend appears to work as it should, but resume results in a reboot.

This is normal behavior with this system, over several kernel updates. It was actually worse a few years ago, when using suspend resulted in random boot failures that were only "solved" by doing an upgrade install of Mageia. Compared to that, this situation is very easy to tolerate.

Perversely, behavior of my HP Pavilion with regard to suspend/hibernate is exactly the opposite. Suspend/resume has always worked perfectly, while hibernate always results in a reboot. Different hardware, different BIOS, different bootloaders - could be anything. Again, relatively easy for me to tolerate, once I know which behavior to avoid.
