No installation issues. Rebooted, logging into x11, ran glmark2, getting a score of 5063. Then I tried logging out and back into Wayland. The screen went blank, I heard the login music, and a cursor appeared in the middle of the black screen. The cursor did not respond to the mouse.

I used the power switch to shut down, and rebooted to the same situation. Rebooting once more, this time logging into x11, was normal. Using it now to make this report.

Holding off from testing the tainted packages, for now.

Before this upgrade, was Wayland working or not tried? If you downgrade
just Wayland to 1.21.0, do you get the same issues?

BTW, for power switch button issues, etc., there is also an upgrade for
systemd-253.31 (also for bluez) in testing, that might be beneficial too.
Comment 10 Herman Viaene 2025-04-15 11:17:26 CEST
I am always running Plasma Wayland here, and that includes mesa 24.2.8 installed. Works well with wayland 1.21.0.

Comment 11 Thomas Andrews 2025-04-15 15:25:14 CEST
I have a third Plasma install on the above system, but without Wayland installed. I booted into that, got all pending updates (it had been about a month), then installed plasma-workspace-wayland and dependencies. Rebooted, then logged out of x11 and into wayland with no issues.

Let me see if I can get a journal from the failed login on the other install.

Journal of a failed wayland login

Journal of the failed login. Looks normal to my untrained eye until the login from sddm, after which I see things like systemd-coredump and server fatal error.

BTW, this system is set to do a normal shutdown if the power button is pressed. That is how this boot was shut down, as there was no response from the Logitech cordless mouse or keyboard. During the shutdown process, the blank screen was replaced with the normal Mageia bubbling cauldron shutdown screen.
Comment 15 Giuseppe Ghibò 2025-04-15 20:12:25 CEST
coredumpctl might show the source of the cores (even if cores are then discarded at next boots).

pretty weird. The current x11-server-wayland has been rebuilt for other security fixes on "24 february 2025", so it should have already been rebuilt against libwayland-1.23.1 and wayland-protocols-1.39.1 which were already on updates_testing (24 dec 2024).

What you should have hit here (i.e. the blank screen) is probably another problem of Wayland with nvidia proprietary drivers, a problem that was already there even before this mesa update. Basically the nvidia modules are not completely "chain" loaded (i.e. the main nvidia kernel modules calls all the other nvidia submodules) before Wayland starts. You might circumvent by installing nvidia-current-initramfs (and reboot), it could help.

Ok, in both cases (Thomas and katnatek), Xwayland segfaults, and have a different video card. Hermann instead works.

Before mesa-24.4.3-
What if you downgrade just wayland to the previous version (i.e 22.1.9-1.mga9), e.g. with:

urpmi --downgrade x11-server-xwayland-22.1.9-1.mga9

Herman's comment says it is working for him with the current versions of Mesa and Wayland, in response to a question from comment 9.

The updates move to mesa-24.3.4-3 and wayland 1.23.1-1. He has not reported on if the updates are working on his system.

Considering this, and with rust-1.78.0 now available, we could potentially skip 24.3.4-3 and jump directly to mesa-25.0.3 to see if that resolves the issue.

As a final attempt, could you try starting the desktop environment using GNOME Wayland instead of Plasma Wayland? GNOME Wayland is known to have fewer issues than Plasma Wayland. By the way, was the `lib64nvidia-egl-wayland1` package
installed previously in Plasma Wayland?
Comment 25 Thomas Andrews 2025-04-17 00:18:28 CEST
I do not have Gnome installed anywhere on this hardware, so no Gnome Wayland, either.

lib64nvidia-egl-wayland1-1.1.11-1 is installed. I don't know when that happened for sure, but see below.

I see that three i586 wayland libraries are also installed, libnvidia-egl-wayland1, libwayland-client0, and libwayland-server0. My guess is that they were installed when I experimented with installing nvidia-current-all some months back.

They were not updated, as I used qarepo to get just the x86_64 packages because I didn't realize they were there. As a user I would not have updated them anyway, because I have the 32-bit repos disabled.

I see mesa-25.0.4-1 built.
Should we wait for newer wayland, wayland-protocols, libdrm to go with it?

Yes, this has bumped to 25.0.4-1.mga9 at this point. Build completed. Still need to update the files list. later.

For Xwayland, beyond this bug, I noticed that there were a lot of development upstream, it reached release 24.1.x, with lot of bugfixes. Maybe we should look at upgrading it to some newer release (maybe not the latest, but something intermediate).

Since katnatek had no joy I tried something else this time. I started by downgrading all of the packages on the list. Then I booted again, successfully logging into wayland.

Noticing that the wayland packages are the same version this time around as the last round, I tried using qarepo to get all the packages on the list *except* the wayland packages. I updated without issues, and rebooted into x11. With no issues there, I tried wayland - and logged in successfully.

Then I used qarepo to get the wayland packages I omitted before, and updated. Only the four wayland libraries were installed. Another boot, and a failed login to wayland.

Booting into x11, I once again downgraded the four wayland libraries, rebooted, and once again the wayland login was successful. I'm using it to write this comment.

Next up: I have one install on another machine where I added Gnome a while back to test gnome-boxes. That install offers a login for gnome-wayland, but not Plasma-wayland. We'll see what happens...
Comment 35 Thomas Andrews 2025-04-20 01:33:07 CEST
No issue with Gnome-Wayland or Gnome Classic Wayland at all in the brief tests I did. I installed plasma-workspace-wayland and dependencies and attempted to log into Plasma Wayland, with no success. Plasma x11 still works OK.

I didn't expect it to help, but I tried switching from sddm to gdm, and I was right - no difference.

Beyond all the bugs affecting current mga9 wayland, apparently there are inconsistencies with plasma wayland, that we already faced in the past indipendently of this mesa upgrade (e.g. https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31841). I'm not completely sure just installing plasma-workspace-wayland would install all the dependencies required for fully enabling wayland in plasma as there could be some missed. E.g. is layer-shell-qt installed? A solution could be to add a virtual package "task-plasma-wayland" with all the known full dependencies required/collected added in it.

I happen to be on my production install right now, where I have not even tried to set up to work with wayland. However, layer-shell-qt IS installed, as are several other Plasma/qt/kf5-related packages that have "wayland" in their names, as well as the four wayland libraries that I have been updating.downgrading on other installs.

When I looked into using wayland in Plasma on Mageia, our forum and wiki all said installing plasma-workspace-wayland and dependencies was all I had to do. (except for changing some kernel parameters if using nvidia-current, 535 at the time the wiki was written)

If I ask MCC on this system to install plasma-workspace-wayland, I see this:

To satisfy dependencies, the following package(s) also need to be installed:

- kwayland-integration-5.27.10-1.mga9.x86_64
- kwin-wayland-5.27.10-1.mga9.x86_64
- lib64qt5waylandcompositor5-5.15.7-2.mga9.x86_64
- qtwayland5-5.15.7-2.mga9.x86_64

I have no idea what else might be needed that isn't being provided.

BTW, The first hardware I used for testing uses nvidia-current, and I changed the suggested kernel parameter. The second, where I also have Gnome installed, has an AMD GPU that uses the radeon driver, so I did nothing to the kernel parameters. If memory serves(and I did pay attention), when I installed plasma-workspace-wayland on that system, the same four dependencies were drawn in.

I will not try that, even if works, we can't ignore the fact that some installations not works, not sure if we can fix this without building more packages
and if we have the necessary to do it, and if not have other side effects.

Does it freeze also with Gnome Wayland/Gnome Classic Wayland?

Are you using sddm? What if you change the sddm greeter to run in wayland too instead of Xorg, e.g. by adding:

DisplayServer=wayland

to the file /etc/sddm.conf?

Another test that could be performed, is about switching to another DisplayManager, other than SDDM, e.g. switching to GDM (e.g. in drakconf:boot/displaymanager).

As the current situation is that the plasma wayland, which wasn't rock solid since the beginning and had already problems, get even worst.

Adding the packages in the new Source list (actually building) would fix the startup problems with plasma wayland.
Comment 48 Giuseppe Ghibò 2025-04-21 23:57:20 CEST
Regarding x11-server-xwayland, to address the other issues beyond the current startup problem, an update to a version newer than 22.1.9 is likely needed. Potential newer upgrades include x11-server-xwayland 23.2.7 or 24.1.6. I attempted to backport both, but it requires additional packages for building that are not yet available in mga9. So I think that should have eventually a separate bug report, with the update request.

Core mesa packages were already installed from the previous test, but I used qarepo to get the whole core list anyway. I used drakrpm-update to update the additional packages. I rebooted, logging into Plasma x11, which was OK. Then I tried Plasma Wayland, which was OK, too. Started Firefox, VirtualBox, and gnome-boxes, all appear OK. No issues with Gnome Wayland or GnomeClassic Wayland, either.

Used qarepo to get the tainted packages, updated, rebooted, went through the various log ins again, all OK. Looks good here

I think we miss some extra nvidia testing
Comment 62 Thomas Andrews 2025-04-23 03:55:04 CEST
Yes, I almost forgot the hardware from comment 6. No installation issues.

No issues logging into Plasma wayland. Things look good, except that there is a bit of instability with Google Earth Pro under Wayland that isn't there in x11.

I think that may be one of the issues that might be addressed in the future wayland update described in comment 48, and should not hold back this update.

That's enough for me , we not have many testers with nvidia hardware BTW

which version of google earth pro are you running? In case, there is a newer version 7.3.6.10201 from mid january 2025.

My version was from December 2022. But, after updating to the newest version, the instability is still there in Wayland, but not in x11. If there is a difference in how much, I don't see it.

I think at least upstream was recompiled by some newer library. By "instability" you mean segfaults/crashes (any core?) or just some artifact?
Comment 68 Thomas Andrews 2025-04-23 16:20:20 CEST
An artifact in the map display where a portion of it will flash to black and back again. This is only on the map, not on the tooltips that pop up when I start it. Also, the window is maximized to the full 1920x1080 screen, if that makes a difference. I have not tried reducing window size, but the window itself seems stable. It's just the map contents that flash out and back in.

Screenshot of Google Earth display in Wayland

This is what the Google Earth screen looks like. As long as I don't move the cursor, it looks like this. If I move the cursor, the black parts go away, the borders overlay appears, and the position coordinates are updated. But when I stop moving the cursor, it goes back to this again.
Comment 70 Giuseppe Ghibò 2025-04-23 17:14:29 CEST
Backup your GE config files/dirs and cleanup disk cache, e.g.:

mv $HOME/.config/Google/GoogleEarthPro.conf \ $HOME/.config/Google/GoogleEarthPro.conf.bak

mv $HOME/.googleearth \
$HOME/.googleearth_bak

Then start GE with:

QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb /opt/bin/googleearth # or where you have it installed

Next, go to the menu Tools -> Options -> 3D View and play/toggle with some options there, e.g. High Color/True Color, Compress, Anisotropic filtering, -> [*] Use safe mode, and eventually disable if enabled the entry "[ ] Use Photorealistic atmosphere rendering". Also Overview Map -> Map size -> move towards smaller to save memory.

I just realised my T510 now can not play video nor pod in browsers - Bug 34189 Comment 43. I have not been using that system for a while so i gave it many updates at once, no idea yet what the culprit is.

It also still show blurred desktop login fields, as it do now and then last year or so, no regression.

This machine has 48GB of RAM - memory shouldn't be a problem.

Nothing I do seems to make any difference, except switching from wayland to x11. It's only with GE, and only with this nvidia quadro K620 card. The hardware from comment 58 doesn't have the problem.

In light of recent comments, like comment 72, I'm pulling the validation and OKs, for now.

BTW, there is also a newer NVidia driver 550.163.01 (bug # not yet opened), you might see if it changes something.

If you want to use software rendering (with current mesa) with GE, while still using the Nvidia OpenGL drivers, you can override the drivers locally for that application using the following command:

__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=mesa \
MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=llvmpipe \
GALLIUM_DRIVER=llvmpipe \
GALLIUM_HUD=fps,cpu \
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 \
<path>/googleearth/pro/googleearth-bin

and it will use the multicore CPU software renderer, but will result in slower performance. As alternative the single core, no SIMD, CPU renderer (this would show how really powerful is a CPU in single core...) with:

__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=mesa \
MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=softpipe \
GALLIUM_DRIVER=softpipe \
GALLIUM_HUD=fps,cpu \
LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 \
<path>/googleearth/pro/googleearth-bin

but it's limited to OpenGL 3.3 capabilities only.

Beyond Wayland's inherent bugs (and the fact we weren't using the latest
24.1.x version), Nvidia has documented several features not supported in
Wayland, here is the list for drivers 550.163.01:

I agree too.

It seems not yet validated. I see still packages in updates_testing.

The issue of Morgan in comment#72 make Thomas remove validation
And not additional feedback from him sive then
Comment 79 Thomas Andrews 2025-04-27 00:43:09 CEST
Yes, I was hoping Morgan could narrow it down more. He reported "my T510 now can not play video nor pod in browsers" here and in bug 34189.

If we can eliminate the packages in this bug as the cause I'd have no problem validating, but I don't want to get sloppy and send something through that's going to break systems.
Comment 80 Morgan Leijström 2025-04-27 08:22:49 CEST
I was waiting to test also with newer kernel 6.6.68 and linus, before trying reverting mesa, but i must say i might not have time to fiddle with the T510 soonish.

For when you test under nouveau instead of nvidia470 ensure you've also installed the package lib64vdpau-driver-nouveau or lib64vdpau-driver-gallium.

Works now :)

With kernel-desktop-6.6.88-3 it first played video without sound.
Was using PipeWire, changed to PulseAudio (using MCC), and it worked.
Also with kernel-desktop-6.6.87-1 OK now too.
Changed back to PipeWire (with wireplummber), and it works too.

It seems somehow the sound configuration had got messed up, and that in turn blocked also videos from playing. Strangely with no relevant message i could see in journal nor terminal from where i launched Firefox. Also strange: when using kernel-desktop-6.6.87-1 and sound was broken, the system tray "loudspeaker" applet did not say it was broken, but when i booted 6.6.88-3 the applet had red line across it and said no sound device available and video played without sound.

Whatever it was, it works now, and that only by switching sound system and back, using MCC.

$ rpm -qa|grep vdpau
lib64vdpau1-1.5-1.mga9

So apparently works without, but i will see if it helps with the occasionally garbled login fields; installing lib64vdpau-driver-nouveau-24.2.8-1.mga9.tainted.x86_64 , description say it helps with acceleration on nouveau.

Maybe we should make an enhancement request to drakX11/installer to install suitable package for nouveau automatically?

The request must be for all hardwares, I have to manually install
lib64vdpau-driver-radeonsi, vainfo give me a clue that something was missing that
time
Comment 85 Thomas Andrews 2025-04-27 22:51:59 CEST
I have stumbled across another Wayland issue with regard to nvidia GPUs and Plasma.

On Mageia 9, if you have nvidia-current installed, and decide to switch to nouveau using XFdrake, the process seems to go OK, but the reboot crashes before the login screen appears with a message that there is a module conflict. To get it working again, I had to force a reboot into "failsafe" mode, and use XFdrake to switch back to nvidia-current.

Removing plasma-workspace-wayland and the four dependencies that were installed with it allows the boot using nouveau to complete.

@Giuseppe: Do you think this should have its own bug, or be added to the big bug of Wayland issues? I suspect Cauldron would have the same issue.

It's likely the underlying problem was already present, but we only encountered it now that we've reached this stage in Wayland usage with NVidia. IMHO, it should have its own bug report, as I don't think a fix will be straightforward making it completely bulletproof without potentially causing further dependency conflicts.

In Wayland furthermore it's no longer using the traditional Xorg's /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, it works because it relies on the package configurations and NVidia dkms modules originally created/retrieved by XFdrake for Xorg. Essentially, the problems seems "conceptual" or about the package logic.

So probably we should add in the errata for now that the switching between nouveau and nvidia proprietary should be performed while in Xorg to be safer.

Also, while experimenting with Wayland, particularly on cauldron (which has the latest Wayland release), I found another strange behavior. For example, if you terminate the XWayland process, with kill -9, the display remains active (at least if no other Xorg applications were running in Wayland), as it's maintained 'up' by the `kwin_wayland` compositor. If you then kill also 'kwin_wayland' process to simulate a crash, it restarts automatically, but with a corrupted resolution. This corruption persists even after a reboot, as if a broken configuration file is being written to `$HOME/.config` and read just after login, causing the whole login process to hang. This brokenness is limited to the user level, as logging in with a newly created user resolves the issue, but for end it results in either a black screen or the inhability to not login anymore. Probably the fix is easy to cleaunp some file in $HOME/.config/kde* files, but you need exactly to know which one if you don't want to cleanup the whole $HOME/.config/kde*.
Comment 87 Morgan Leijström 2025-04-28 02:15:14 CEST
I think in general Wayland issues with KDE/Plasma should be mentioned in Bug 31841.

When worked upon, each issue should have an own bug.

31841 and some other are listed in

-> Bug 34228
 - drakX11 (and installer) should install a suitable vdpau driver

wayland-protocols-1.39-1.mga9 is listed in the .adv but wayland-protocols-1.43-1.mga9 is what's in updates_testing.
