Mageia9, 6.6.83-server-1.mga9
Updated all the 64-bit packages.

Had to run `sudo drakboot --boot` for the entries to show up in the grub menu.
Rebooted to Mate desktop OK.

Comment 13 PC LX 2025-04-16 10:14:28 CEST
I think I have encountered an issue with this kernel and PCI GPU pass through.

With the previous kernel version 6.6.83-desktop-1.mga9 there was no issues but with the new kernel version 6.6.87-desktop-1.mga9 the QEMU/KVM VMs with PCI GPU pass through (both for Mageia 9 and Windows 10) do not work. The VMs show a blank screen and the VMs use one core at 100% and do not boot.

Looking at the host system's journal for kernel version 6.6.87-desktop-1.mga9 and comparing it to previous boots with the kernel version 6.6.83-desktop-1.mga9, I see the following lines about TSC and clocksource being unstable that are new. I don't know if this has any connection to the VMs with PCI GPU pass through not booting.

Will continue to investigate.

What's your current boot cmdline (/proc/cmdline) in host machine and which version of qemu are you using? What if you try to boot with either one of these:

1) tsc=nowatchdog
2) tsc=reliable

?

Have lots of work to do today so will try at the end of the day or tomorrow and post the results.
Note that it would still be a regression since with the previous kernel version there was no tsc issue.

Comment 30 PC LX 2025-04-23 00:34:18 CEST
This is a continuation of comment 13.

I continue to have issues with this kernel version, and VMs with GPU pass through.
I have done a more detailed analysis of the issue.

The issue happens as follows:
- Boot the 6.6.87-desktop-1.mga9 in the host system;
- Start a QEMU/KVM VM with a PCI GPU pass through;
- The first time the VM boots and runs correctly, including the PCI GPU pass through (desktop, OpenGL, Vulkan, OpenCL, DirectX work);
- Shutting down also works;
- The second time staring a VM with a PCI GPU pass through does not work correctly.
  The VM does not boot, and the host shows one CPU core used at 100%.
- I have to signal TERM the VM to terminate it.

I have tested Mageia 9 (M9), and Windows 10 (W10) guests.
Whatever the first and second is, the result is the same:
- 1st M9, 2nd M9;
- 1st M9, 2nd W10;
- 1st W10, 2nd W10;
- 1st W10, 2nd M9;

Other VMs without PCI GPU pass through work correctly, even after the VM with PCI GPU pass through stop working.

No message is show in the journal indicating any QEMU/KVM error.

I have also tested with the QEMU version in updates_testing but the issue remains.

Regarding the "TSC found unstable after boot, most likely due to broken BIOS" issue.
This message appears in most boots of the 6.6.87-desktop-1.mga9 but not always.
Even in the boots that do not show the TSC message, the VM issue still persists, so it may be unrelated.

Maybe I should try running the qemu with strace to see if I can get some clues.
I will see if I can get qemu to start with strace.
Comment 34 Giuseppe Ghibò 2025-04-23 01:10:19 CEST
You might see if there are core generated with coredumpctl, but probably aren't.

What is not completely clear is the configuration. The hardware listed has:

1) 1 CPU AMD 5600G with integrated GPU with chipset Cezanne.
2) 1 discrete GPU AMD Radeon RX 6500 that is used for the GPU passtrough.

from what I know, and tested in the past, the BIOS as soon as you plug in a discrete card on the motherboard, it would just disable the integrated card of the CPU (and in the OS it's not listed in lspcidrake), so you end up with a total of just one GPU only, and to get full passtrough you would need at least 2 discrete card, one for the HOST and the other for the GUEST.

qemu gets stuck using 100% of one core but does not crash, so there is no core dump.

I had to change a BIOS setting (don't remember what exactly) to keep both the integrated and discrete GPUs enabled, and usable at the same time. It has worked quite well for years using this setup, and without issues, until this kernel 6.6.87-desktop-1.mga9).

BTW, haven't checked whether the motherboard supports a rollback BIOS feature, but here:

https://www.asus.com/motherboards-components/motherboards/tuf-gaming/tuf-gaming-b450-plus-ii/helpdesk_bios?model2Name=TUF-GAMING-B450-PLUS-II

it lists several BIOS versions beyond 3802, with changelogs mentioning 'improves stability'.
Comment 37 Giuseppe Ghibò 2025-04-23 13:36:23 CEST
BTW, here is also a newer kernel (with patches from the upcoming 6.6.88):

https://download.copr.fedorainfracloud.org/results/ghibo/mageia9-bonus/mageia-9-x86_64/08954618-kernel/

Just install the package: 'kernel-desktop-6.6.87-2.mga9-1-1.mga9.x86_64.rpm' and see whether it works with your passthrough.

IIRC another requisite for GPU passthrough is that the GPU card belong to a single iommugroup without other devices in the same group.

I wonder whether the kernel change might have changed the iommugroup topology. Where the iommugroups exactly the same as before?

After rebooting the host to use the kernel 6.6.87-desktop-2.mga9 provided by Giuseppe Ghibò in comment 37, the issue of the VMs with GPU pass through not booting seems to be resolved. I have booted, rebooted, and shutdown Mageia 9 and Windows 10 VMs with PCI GPU pass through multiple times without issues.

These results are still preliminary, and more extensive testing needs to be done, but, for now, the issue seems resolved. Will continue to use the kernel 6.6.87-desktop-2.mga9 and see there are any other issues.

Always. Immediately.
I only get a still picture, no sound, seem not to play.

Forgot which version now. Will try different and chromium later.
Could also try kernel-linus.

I might also try dnf distrosync and then update only kernel or mesa+friends.
Comment 51 Giuseppe Ghibò 2025-04-24 13:07:48 CEST
At this point I think there are two possibilities.

1) validate with current 6.6.87-1mga9 then open a new bug for next 6.6.88 which would would address also the problems with passthrough.

2) skip 6.6.87 and promote to 6.6.88 once out, redoing all the tests.

You might try the 6.6.87-2 as of comment #37, but keep in mind that these inconsistencies are pretty common with nouveau, especially on older card models/chipset, mostly because it's missingthe firmware. The firmware for nvidia in current kernel-firmware (as well as upstream) only includes from a certain card arch on (IIRC maxwell or turing). For ancient cards there are some scripts floating around that extracts the firmware from a certain specific version of older drivers.

Yes, they (88-1, 88-2 and 88-3) were mostly the same package, rebuild due to packaging problems for building for the kmod-virtualbox. I updated the complete new files list.

Two installs, one set of hardware. Testing desktop and server kernels.Server kernel install has Wayland installed, seems OK. Between the two installs, I tried Firefox, Thunderbird, VLC, VirtualBox, Boxes, an openvpn VPN, Kpatience. No issues to report regarding the kernel.

Switching from nvidia-common to nouveau caused a boot failure of the Wayland install, but that is a Wayland issue, not related to the kernel.

mga9-64 OK on Asus G75V * this use nvidia470 driver *

Tests per comment #41 revisted: full OK using desktop 6.6.88-3

Also using VirtualBox 7.1.8 with Win XP guest, tested both dkms built kmod as well as our binary package.
OK performing time critical protocol "PPI" on USB2 with Siemens S7-200 CPU using adapter. (same guest fails this running on Windows 11 VB 7.1.8 host even on a much faster machine! Guest vdi was copied from the W11 system.)

mga9-x86_64 desktop kernel OK on my Thinkpad T510

Also using mesa-25.0.4-1.mga9(tainted) and friends (Bug 34190) and systemd 253.31-1 (no bug) from testing

Lately per recommendation also added lib64vdpau-driver-nouveau-24.2.8-1.mga9.tainted (lib64vdpau1-1.5-1.mga9 was already installed)

Filesystems all on one SSD: ext4 / and /home plus swap in LVM on LUKS encrypted pv, separate /boot and EFI partitions, NTFS partitions for MSW10

suspend-resume: OK

hibernate-restore: As always on this machine:
hibernate saves OK but fail to shut off; instead power lamp blinks - user need to hold it in to shut off. Next boot it restores saved session OK.

Plasma X11, All OK incl Firefox playing video over wifi, using networkmanager.
