Hi.

Now using on two computers, Intel I5 with integrated graphics and AMD Ryzen 4800H with integrated graphics, on Mageia 9 x86_64 Plasma KDE X11.

It works fine at the moment, audio, video, internet, applications, restart and suspension ok.

mga9-64 6.6.43-desktop-1 OK on my workstation

__Filesystems
boot: ext4
in LVM on a LUKS encrypted partition: / ext4, /home ext4, swap, swap2
big rust drive: plain ext4

__Clean update
using drakrpm, filtered on updates, testing repo enabled as updates

__Tested
desktop: Plasma X11
also from testing: sddm, mesa tainted, pipewire, pulseaudio, vlc, VirtualBox
some desktop apps, firefox internet video, flatpak apps, ...

Using nvidia-current 550.100, CUDA-Z tells CUDA works.

vt switching: OK

hibernate-resume: OK

suspend-resume: OK (popup: desktop effects have restarted, and as usual my monitor need manual power cycle if suspended for more than 15 minutes or els eit just display a message it get no signal)

VirtualBox 7.0.20 with Guest Windows 7, locally dkms built kmod
Windows update found security update, I let it update, and rebooted.
Tested dynamic window resizing, USB 2 flash disk, host folder sharing write protected and not, bidirectional clipboard, drag file from Dolphin to Explorer, Internet video in Firefox. Known USB2 problem Bug 33400: the workaround works.

mga9, x64
8-core AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS
Radeon 780M Graphics
AMD Phoenix1 driver: amdgpu
Realtek RTL8125 2.5GbE driver: r8169

No issues with installation and reboot to the desktop kernel under Mate.
Ran a spectrum of tests for graphics and cpu. All OK.
Video and pulseaudio sound working well. Sound via bluetooth to portable speakers which came online as soon as they were switched on. Stellarium launches and registers my location automatically - not much use in daytime though. Celestia works fine - travelled to Vesta; right-hand mouse-button allows the body to be rotated in any direction.

There is a bit of a problem with glmark2. It cornered the market in CPU cores, which made multitasking very hazardous. There are 16 hyper-threaded cores. The upside is a very good score of 16754 which I had heretofore only ever seen on nvidia with the proprietary driver. It was run as usual, without options. Have to live with it I suppose.

Leaving this to run for a while. Good so far.

This is pretty weird it monopolizes multitasking. If there is a thing that this kernel (kernel-desktop) should handle very well is this kind of heavy load, being very resilient and with good latency/reaction to desktop applications (thanks to the BORE scheduler). AFAIK it can sustain glmark2 and at the same time the aquarium bench (from webglsamples.org) within chromium-browser with selection of 30000 fishes, like a breeze. You might try using latest mesa-24.1.4 and latest x11-driver-video-amdgpu-23.0.0-2.mga9 from updates_testing. It should go score towards 20000 for a 780M iGPU, IIRC. Maybe only thing in that case is CPU fan spinning faster/louder.

Comment 19 Len Lawrence 2024-07-31 23:16:55 CEST
That seems to have cured it. Minimal latency now in keyboard operations during glmark2. Score 16774.

MGA9-64 Plasma Wayland on HPPavillion.
No installation issues.
As this is a brandnew M9 installation, I had to setup wifi, NFS access to desktop PC, printer and scanner configuration, additional install of LO Base.
All worked OK. glmark2 score is not the highest I've seen on this laptop, but fair enough.
No objections found.

Continued testing different graphics drivers, noting differences only:

(I will not test nvidia-newfeature - probably no change since Bug 33375 comment 9.)

kernel mode setting: suspend-resume perfectly OK, it really wakes my monitor up also after long sleep.

nouveau: suspend-resume kind of works but like nvidia drivers it do not wake up my monitor (as opposed to kms), and after a little use desktop gets unresponsive (still updates displayed windows (gkrellm). I switched to tty4 and launched drakx11 to switch to nvidia470 but Bug 33452 made my system unbootable :(

Sigh. I am "going fishing"...

Meh, some mean creature maybe read what I was writing?

Just now Firefox suddenly closed while I was doing banking on my workstation.
In system journal:

This is with kernel 6.6.43-desktop-1, Graphics driver modesetting

Nothing else seem affected, I just started Firefox again, do same banking, and write this.

That said Firefox crash about once a month on average, and I almost always run nvidia-current. Going back to that now.
I dont remember seeing a culprit in journal before though.

This is also strange: Monitor became black for two seconds when I issued inxi -G per below!
Nothing visible from that in journal.

I tested a guest upgrade also without issues.

Well then I can not think of more we need to test.

I think we can validate this.

Whiteboard: (none) => MGA9-64-OK, MGA9-32-OK

I can think of one more thing that has been troublesome off and on in the past...

MGA9-64 Plasma, AMD Phenom II X4 910, HD 8490 graphics, Atheros-based wifi, but dkms-rtl8192eu is also installed for testing purposes.

No installation issues. Rtl8192eu driver built and installed successfully. No issues to note after the reboot, either. Looks good to go.

Validating.
