Description papoteur 2024-04-09 17:31:00 CEST
Description of problem:
Some application using a lot of memory can crash when the memory map is too low. The default value is set to 2^32 which was enough with 8Gib of RAM.

According to the page linked, vm.max_map_count=1048576 could be adapted until 128 GiB and could be the default.

I don't know what is the good way to apply the change.

The bug appear, on games like Hogwarts Legacy or Star Citizen. There is around 20 games today impacted by this value too low. But we can consider in the future games will also need this change.

Ubuntu already have make the choice to increase at 1048576 for the next LTS. Ubuntu 24.04 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/2057792

Fedora have already made the change since Fedora 39.

Arch validated also the change this week.
