Description Gérard Le Luel 2024-03-23 13:44:56 CET
Description of problem:
Hello,

Display bug :

I'm using Plasma / KDE 5.27.10 on Mageia 9
I use Plasma with 4 activities that have 4 virtual desktops.
Sometimes I see this display bug when I'm using big programs like Flightgear, maybe when my PC swaps.
Like this screenshot : https://www.mageialinux-online.org/upload/swap.jpg

URL of the display bug image :
https://www.mageialinux-online.org/upload/bug_affichage.jpg

It's just visual programs always work.
I restart the PC and everything goes back to normal.

There's also the "Slide Back" graphics component that causes this kind of bug. I don't use it anymore.

Very strange: most of the desktop image upside-down, except a few elements!

Does this error happen for all 4 desktops?
Does it persist when you swap between them?
Try Ctl/Alt/F2-6 to switch to a virtual console, then Ctl/Alt/F1 to go back to the graphical desktop; problem still there?
Rather than re-booting to get back to normal, try less drastic:
 Logout/in
 Ctl/Alt/Bksp/Bksp to kill & re-start X.

My apologies for taking so long to reply!

So I thought I'd restart the PC rather than disconnecting, because it takes a long time to disconnect when there's a bug.

Thanks for "Ctl/Alt/Bksp/Bksp", I'll do that the next time there's a bug.
I'll get back to you.

I haven't looked at the 4 desktops.

This error only occurs if Plasma is configured with several activities and several desktops.
If I delete the activities and leave just one, the bug no longer occurs.
Which is a shame because I like the idea of activities.
With Mageia 8 this bug didn't exist, I was using Plasma with 4 activities which have 4 desktops.

I've found a workaround, I press "Shift+Super Key (Windows)+F12" to remove the 3D effects, and I press the same key combination again to reactivate 3D, and it works.

I made a mistake: it's "Shift + Alt + F12" to remove 3D.

Thank you for your extra information. But you might still answer, if you can:
- Does it persist when you swap between desktops? (The easiest test).
- Try Ctl/Alt/F2-6 to switch to a virtual console, then Ctl/Alt/F1 to go back to the graphical desktop; problem still there?
- Does it persist after Logout/Login? (Less drastic than re-starting X).

You made an important discovery: related to 3D.
This is unkown territory for me, so CC'ing Frank & Morgan who are more familiar with Plasma, to comment.
We shall almost certainly push this to the KDE people.

OK, I'll get back to you as soon as the bug reappears.
Probably this weekend.
Comment 6 Gérard Le Luel 2024-03-30 00:02:55 CET
So here we are, this Friday evening the bug is back!

I used LibreOffice and a few other programs without any problem.
Then I used Flightgear for my main activity and a network game on Steam for my 'Games' activity.
I disable 3D to play big games with [Alt + Shift + F12].

The bug appeared when I activated 3D.
The Steam window was upside down, as in my first screenshot.
I had taken a screenshot, but forgot to save it.

Changing the virtual desktop doesn't solve the bug.
This time the key combination [Alt + Shift + F12] didn't solve the bug.

But [Ctl/Alt/Bksp/Bksp] does!
Thanks for the info!

I think there's a problem with the activities on my Plasma 5.27.10 version.

Here's a screenshot of my activities which have four virtual desktops each:
https://www.mageialinux-online.org/upload/activite.jpg
First of all, I find it strange that you can't select the activities below the first one with the mouse.

I almost always use the "default" activity.
Steam was on the "Games" activity
Google Earth was open on the "Knowledge" activity

The bug appeared when I activated the 3D effects again.
As long as I don't use big programs like Flightgear and Steam games, there's no bug.
Remember that if I delete the 3 extra activities to leave only the "Default" activity, there's no more bug.

That's it for now. :-)

Thank you for your extra tests. You are certainly pushing your system hard.

"Changing the virtual desktop doesn't solve the bug" indicates that once the screen goes upside-down on one desktop, it is the same on others.

Assigning to Plasma team, not hopeful that they can do anything.

Comment 8 Gérard Le Luel 2024-03-31 23:36:27 CEST
Thank you for taking care of my problem.

Personally, I think it's a problem with activities.
Because if I only have one activity there are no more bugs.

Ok for now it's not a problem.
Mageia 9 and KDE/Plasma is a very good system that I really like! :-)
