Same sort of thing under Mageia 8:
 $ monster
 terminate called after throwing an instance of 'ReadError*'
 Aborted (core dumped)

Another golden oldie fault!

The url https://github.com/Nooskewl/monster is not working, I find other url https://nooskewl.ca but also not works finally I find https://cmykilluminati.net/ , but only direct to a google drive where you can find the tgz, but I don't know if are source code, maybe we need to recommend steam for this https://steamcommunity.com/app/409370 ?
Comment 4 Lewis Smith 2024-01-30 21:05:18 CET
I know nothing about Steam. If it works only under that, do we ERRATA it? or obsolete it if not?
Comment 5 Aurelian R 2024-01-31 23:19:59 CET
Monster RPG 1,2,3 games seem to be archived here:

They are indeed. All activity looks to be 8y ago. However, the link in comment 3
leads to
 https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1avrnNXCkBQuelQDrhuCfMuvzNxZmb2ev
which lists among other games 3 variants of Monster...tar.gz, 2022-3; the first being v1.33. Unable to download anything; do you have to have a Google Drive account?
And which variant?

We cannot decide what to do with this, so assigning to packagers to do that:
- update the version we have?
- drop (obsolete) it? which leaves the Steam possibility.

Assigning globally since no one packager is evident for it.

Thanks for testing, this was broken indeed. Seems like I made a mistake in a patch for locating the data files, so it maybe never worked...?

The website/google drive you found are for binary releases of the game, which is sadly no longer open source. The version on LibreGamesArchive (which is a GitHub org I run) is the current one we have packaged I believe.

Advisory:
=========

Updated monster package fixes starting the game

  The data files couldn't be located properly, leading the game closing on
  launch. This has been fixed.

The URL in the package was not found (404). Is the URL correct?

$ urpmq -i monster | grep URL
URL         : https://github.com/Nooskewl/monster

Please ignore the previous comment 8. I was looking at the old package. The new package has the correct URL (https://github.com/LibreGamesArchive/monster). Sorry for the noise.

Mageia9, x86_64, nvidia graphics

Installed fine and brought lua with it.
Played the game from the Games menu. Did not make much headway - told to fetch somebody because it was time to eat, found an empty house then chased an old man who noticed I was carrying his old sword. Crossed a garden and stopped at the outside gate by a guard who said there were a lot of monsters about that day. Chickened out and hit the exit button.

Like all the others tested there was a soundtrack.

Comment 11 Thomas Andrews 2024-02-02 02:40:08 CET
When there are a lot of monsters about, the best thing to do is to gather your loved ones and exercise the better part of valor. We must choose our battles, Len, unless they choose us...

Validating.
