Description Jean-François Bachelet 2024-01-10 01:19:10 CET
Description of problem:

Since I've gone the Mageia 9 way I get multiple problems with Dolphin that are really tiresome :(

- I make lotsa archives compressions 'as zip here' almost daily and there seems that Dolphin for Mageia 9 got some 'improvements' that are Highly Unwanted by me (at least!) as it are preventing me to works flawlessly and aren't possible to stop (NO preferences entries for these found ! :((( )

see : I choose a file or drawer, right click on it and and choose 'compress here as file/drawer_name.zip' as I've always done 'till now..., then I choose another and do the same, and on and on...

Problem is : as soon as a compression is finished, Dolphin recklessly Jump to that finished stuff and highlight it. That's Highly Unwanted here and wasn't ever done by Dolphin on Mageia 8 !

Why it is a problem ? 'cause if I was in the process to do another file at the same time when that jumps occurs I get a zip file named as the file I was working on BUT with the jumped to other finished stuff contents !, So I must delete that bogus file and redo all the work lost 'cause of that 'idiotic' jumping behavior (2 files to redo, the one jumped to and the one I wanted to do)...

Please Don't tell me 'you could just rename the file and go again to the other one you wanted to make and do it' as that's still plenty of Unwanted Work to redo that should NEVER have occurred at first ! grrr!

Can you tell me Why the heck that stuff has been implemented in Dolphin at first ??? the old way Dolphin was working under Mageia 8 never doing that crap jumping was fine and now it gets so nerve wrecking so much that you get the envy to switch to Debian...

Don't tell me 'switch to another file browser so if you don't like this' as that's definitelly NOT the kind of things to ever tell to customers and I will never do such with mine...

So please kill that 'jumping' behavior or at a minimum make it a preference option that can be shut off ! thanks.

- Second problem : when you open a drawer that contains lotsa files and want to close it before all files in it has been shown or the files preview icon has all been rendered, then Dolphin just crash and closes killing all other works it was doing at that moment in the other panel!

- Third problem : Why the heck can't I find / there are strictly NO preference option that permit to add a keyboard shortcut to ANY Dolphin menu item ??? just a bunch of it are possible, NOT those I would want / need to set !

see : I use 'compress to xxx.zip' a lot and going each time to the menu to click on that option is a BIG waste of time and wear the mouse buttons pretty fast (when you know how rubbish the mouse switches are -even in very pricey mouses!- that's a very wrong way to do to force the users to kill it with numerous clicks that could be avoided just by being able to set a keyboard shortcut ! -yes keyboard keys are WAY thougher that mouse switches (even on cheap keyboards) and last WAY longer!-
here I need to change mouse 6 to 10 time a year ! that's an hell of a budget just for mouses...
see : ONE good Japanese made mouse switch cost an hefty 3+ Euros (those Chinese crappy ones that are factory soldered in it generally cost only 0.9-1 Euro each), add to it the time needed to replace the 2 that are faulty in a mouse where you can't do other job and you will easily understand why this is irritating and definitely not cool.

So, Please add an option to set keyboard shortcuts to ANY Dolphin (and others -same, etc...- softs) menu items, this one is a 'Highly Wanted' amelioration !

- Fourth : one thing that would have been Very Useful to see being implemented and has not, will be an option to choose multiple files/drawers at once in Dolphin and just ask for 'compress each one as xx.zip (or else) here' and get a zip file for each stuff selected and Not as now a unique monstruous zip file containing ALL selected stuff ! Thanks by advance :)

- Fifth : when working I often use multiple two-paneled Dolphins at once (easily 3-6 or more) (yes I have a lot of screens to work on ;)

Would it been possible to have more than two panels (actual limits) in Dolphin ? this will be very useful for me (at least, I'm sure others will be happy to see this too), that limit is the main reason why I need multiple instances of Dolphin to work...

Yes I know that I can have more than two 'Tabs' opened in dolphin, but that's not I need as you still ONLY see one or two of it shown at once... another problem here is that when -for example- you do a copy/move/or else stuff on files from one panel to another, I can't have an eye on the others tabs at the very same time ;)

Six panels on Three opened Dolphins side by side on Two monitors screens is way better for my way to work than lotsa 'tabs' that only two can be seen at once...

That's why I dream of a giant wideable Dolphin version that you can set to have, say, 10 opened panels each with its disk/place contents to show and that you can dispose as you want, say, all 10 side by side or/and stacked vertically as you wish (per example the four firsts as two side by side on two verticaly stacked lines + six others horizontaly side by side or any other way of arrangement...

I stop there for today... ^^)

Enhancement suggestions and bugreports for KDE Plasma components need to be made at the KDE bugtracker. Mageia does not develop dolphin nor implements any features in it.

Many of your points are not even bugs, but design decisions made by the KDE developement team. So your need to make your complains upstream...

1st "Problem": The jumping is a design decision from the KDE Plasma team. Starting from Plasma 2.23 the team made a complete overhaul of menus and functions of dolphin. If you want that changed, convince the Plasma developers upstream. The same behaviour applies for other linux distributions which use actual Plasma versions. NOTABUG.

2nd "Problem": Maybe the only real issue with your installation. Report it upstream at https://bugs.kde.org/

3rd "Problem": The KDE Plasma team decided that it is not possible to have Shortcuts for ALL menu items and actions (technically not feasible and possible to have it for ALL actions...). If you want that changed, convince the Plasma developers upstream. The same behaviour applies for other linux distributions which use actual Plasma versions. NOTABUG.

4th "Problem": No GUI tool for compressing of files provides such a feature. If you want that changed, convince the developers upstream. NOTABUG.

5th "Problem": If you want that changed, convince the Plasma developers upstream. The same behaviour applies for other linux distributions which use actual Plasma versions. NOTABUG.

As you can easily see, there is nothing what can be done on Mageia side.
As the Plasma versions between Mageia 8 and Mageia 9 differs in a high range, the vast amount of implemented features and functions may occur to you as a bug. But as already said, Plasma got a complete ouverhaul starting with Plasma 5.23...
