Description Oleg Kitain 2011-10-25 11:33:37 CEST
Description of problem:
When I want to install texinfo, it gives me dependencies for 600 MB. The source for the problem is the texmf package. I am not entirely sure we need all that huge amount of fonts for every single installation. Maybe we could create texlive-texmf-light with the most needed things. and give a choice to the user?

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
texlive-texmf-20100722-14.mga1.noarch.rpm

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Try to install texinfo
2.See the dependencies.

# LC_ALL=C urpmi --test texlive-texmf
To satisfy dependencies, the following packages are going to be installed:
(test only, installation will not be actually done)
   Package Version Release Arch
(medium "Core Release")
  perl-Algorithm-Diff 1.190.200 3.mga1 noarch
  perl-Tk 804.30.0 1.mga2 i586
  perl-XML-XPath 1.130.0 2.mga1 noarch
  texlive-texmf 20110705 5.mga2 noarch
688MB of additional disk space will be used.
372MB of packages will be retrieved.
Proceed with the installation of the 4 packages? (Y/n) n

It seems it's still not fixed. And there was bug that DVD doesn't fit on 4GB USB. We have 370MB usless stuff on that DVD.
10 DVDs is 3,6GB of useless traffic for mirror, we probably have thousands of users (~90% users x 690MB wasted disk space in their computers :P).

I'm probably able to go on.. ;P
Comment 4 Manuel Hiebel 2012-01-14 13:35:40 CET
Texlive was in the mga1 so I don't see the issue for that point.
(and mdv 2010.1 was 4.4G)

And for having a smaller package there is a *lot* of work to do (see the one make at mdv), so this one is not a blocker for me.
Comment 5 Anne Nicolas 2012-03-14 10:27:32 CET
While it's annoying one, it's not release blocker and we had no time to fix that one now. Should be checked for Mageia 3

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja

Yes, the package is still well over 600 megabytes. You can still mark it for the next cauldron.

Comment 8 Chris Denice 2013-04-03 11:24:21 CEST
It is very difficult to cut this package in a consistent way, maybe impossible?

I am using it for work and the move of mandriva was catastrophic. Latex was unusable anymore and one had to reverse engineer which of the cut smaller packages was missing.

My point of view is that it is better to have it working and big than having it small and unusable. I would close this bug as WONTFIX...

In any case I am happy to help.

Cheers,
Chris.

having this as a big package is better than the fedora way, where they put each latex-package in a single rpm.

I've 'fixed' this bug in two steps.
First, texinfo has now a subpackage texinfo-tex which requires texlive, but texinfo does not requires texlive anymore. This is done already in mga3.
Second, in cauldron, by splitting texlive-texmf in two packages:
- texlive-collection-basic (sufficient for most usage) 120 MB (300MB on disk)
- texlive-dist (the rest of the previous texlive-texmf) 430 MB.
I'll push that split as an update to mga3 if there is no problem coming from the split in cauldron.

I tend to think this approach fixes the issue reported (which wasn't an issue per se more a feature request BTW).
