Don't know what is going on here. Seem to have been booting the 88 kernels rather than the 98. Need to investigate.
Looks like the wrong partition, user in zombie mode. Repaired that and the desktop kernel booted fine. Shall try recreating the vdi sometime and recheck the BIOS settings for the nth time. Otherwise this looks OK.
