Description of problem: This has happened on only one piece of hardware so far - A mini-computer containing an IntelNUC12 processor. This originally contained an UBUNTU Mate system. The current system was installed from a USB device with support for GNOME, Plasma, Mate, Cinnamon and Xfce desktop environments for testing purposes only - it will eventually be used with Mate only. The problem arises when switching from one DE to another. Sometimes the login succeeds but on other occasions tries to establish the desktop but cycles back to login. This has been seen in the past for GDM on one particular machine so SDDM was used as a greeter. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Mageia9-beta1.6 x86_64 iso How reproducible: This is very difficult to say. Experiments were carried out to try to establish reproducibility. Below is one such series of logins. It is not obvious what the common factor in failures is. Wayland seems to be reliable but X11 based DEs sometimes break. There also seems to sort of evolution going on because in an earlier series of tests it was impossible to get back to Mate or anything else after another DE login had failed, not without rebooting. Or maybe not; GDM was used in those tests. For what it is worth the boot log is available. Steps to Reproduce: 1 Mate - OK 2 GNOME Wayland - OK 3 Mate - OK 4 GNOME Classic Wayland - OK 5 Mate - OK 6 Cinnamon - failed 7 Mate - failed Saved journal (2) 8 GNOME - OK 9 Mate - OK 10 Xfce - failed 11 Mate - OK Installed task-xfce 12 Xfce - failed 13 GNOME Wayland - OK 14 Mate - OK 15 Plasma X11 - OK 16 Mate - OK 17 Cinnamon software rendering - failed 18 Mate - OK 19 Cinnamon - failed 20 Mate - OK Installed task-cinnamon 21 Cinnamon - failed 22 Mate - OK 23 Plasma - OK 24 GNOME Classic Wayland - OK 25 GNOME Classic on Xorg - failed 26 Mate - OK 1. 2. 3.

Thank you for reporting this. I noticed it about a week ago when testing something under all desktops, but hoped it would sort itself out. Apparently not. I have just re-done tests on an up-to-date Cauldron system. With lightDM and LXDM: Cinnamon loops on login screen Gnome (Wayland) "Oh no! ..." Gnome (Xorg) "Oh no! ..." LXDE OK LxQt OK Mate goes nowhere, stops dead Plasma OK (but V slow to start via LXDM) Xfce OK (but slow to start via LXDM) Trying GDM: "Oh no! ..." even before login screen Did NOT try SDDM (c.f. Len). Since my failures are all Gnome related, if indirectly, assigning thus. However, they are not consistent with Len's SDDM experience. CC'ing Jani.
