Description Herman Viaene 2023-01-29 10:25:42 CET
Description of problem:
After each boot of Mageia, radiotray-ng is started automatically. This happens because there is an entry for radiotray-ng in /etc/xdg/autostart.
I don't see radiotray-ng as an essential system-wide "service".

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
0.2.7, but this is a specific Mageia "feature".

How reproducible:
All the time.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.

It's not a Mageia specific feature, but an upstream decision. Upstream build system installs a .desktop file to /etc/xdg/autostart. We are only setting a proper icon for it during the build. One can disable the autostart, if desired, from DE's session & startup settings.

So it boils down to should we enforce our distro style, or let upstream decide.

IMO, it should not autostart, until user sets it to.

Do we have other similar stuff autostarting by default?

Service style things like KDEconnect, Nextcloud-client, etc autostart which i find good, but no media/entertainment type program i know of (but i only have a few)

Not even much more used programs like LibreOffice, Firefox or Thunderbird autostart by default. (OK these are much heavier so another good reason not to).

Lets say like this..what's the purpose of tray app or applet if it's not autostarted to tray?

I do believe you have a point there Jani :)
Comment 5 Herman Viaene 2023-01-30 09:44:10 CET
What is the purpose of having such entertainment stuff starting automatically system-wide??? You might as well start vlc-player system-wide.
Comment 6 sturmvogel 2023-01-30 10:07:35 CET
You should ask this upstream if it bothers you that much.

I'm used to it to configure my system to my likings. That is a normal job of a system administrator...

It's not a system-wide service nor a desktop application like VLC, but an applet living in a system tray and meant to be started with other applets when DE starts. That's how they are working.

Like said, one can disable the autostart from DE's session & startup settings if the behavior is not pleasing.

@ Jani,
Well, if that was an upstream decision, some of our colleagues decided against it. Fedora and PCLinuxOS do not start it, and Mint I could not test because the installation has some problem.
I know it can be changed, but I find it such a stupid exercie alltogether h

Sorry, wrong key pressed,
It is still an annoying thing to have to look for such thing I do not use very often (but I do every now and then).
Comment 10 Jani Välimaa 2023-02-01 18:50:15 CET
We might borrow some things from other distros, but we are an independent distro and not forced to follow the decisions others make. That's the reason why I'm still using and maintaining pkgs for Mageia. If one wants to use pkgs like distro X does, perhaps one should then use distro X instead.
Comment 11 Herman Viaene 2023-02-02 09:11:01 CET
Do not put words into my mouth I didn't speak. I just wanted to illustrate that
1. What upstream does is not always sacrosanct
2.I'm not the only one that thinks this decision is less than desirable (to remain polite).
But let's close the discussion, keeping it going is not worth the time we spend on it.
Comment 12 Morgan Leijström 2023-02-02 09:25:52 CET
Yes it is a matter of taste

We have lots of other things to put effort on

Could also debate if closing as invalid, wontfix.. . settling on worksforme as that word is right even if that label was intended for slightly other meaning... maybe we should have a "whatever" flag ;)
