I will open another bug for plymouth.

Switching to the "Mageia" background in the desktop background chooser dialog fixes this by using the correct resolution. I suspect that the image used by the install was random and wrong. Until plasma is set to use the correct default images when the new Mga9 backgrounds are uploaded, this cannot be properly tested so closing for now as invalid.
