System journal recording the kernel bug

Initially observed and reported on qa-discuss by Ben McMonagle, using the Mageia-9-alpha1-Live-Xfce-i586 ISO on an Asus T100TA. Reproduced on an Asus X205TA, first using the same Live ISO, then by adding the desktop586 kernel to an otherwise working 32-bit install (using the standard i686 desktop kernel).

By booting to run level 3 with plymouth disables, then running startx, I could capture the fault in the system journal. Once the bug hit, the system would only respond to Ctrl-Alt-Del. When booting with plymouth enabled, it fails as soon as the system switches to the splash screen, and then only responds to a long press on the power button.

The highlight from the system journal is:

Thank you for the comprehensive report. Dare one ask for the kernel version?
I could not see it anywhere (apologies if it is visible).

Noticing that your hardware is 64-bit, what is Ben's? Just in case it matters.

Assigning to kernel anyway.

6.0.7-desktop586-1.mga9. It's there in the quoted extract from the journal, but the line wrapping obscures it :-(

The same. They both have 32-bit UEFI but 64-bit processors.

Comment 4 Martin Whitaker 2023-01-01 12:29:36 CET
This is fixed for me with the Mageia-9-beta1-Live-Xfce-i586 ISO running the 6.1.1-desktop586-4.mga9 kernel. I'll wait for Ben to confirm before closing.
Comment 5 Ben McMonagle 2023-01-01 21:09:47 CET
