We need the updated version of the connector to be able to use the extensions for gnome. The extension has changed name, and is now here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-browser-extension/-/tags Please update to 11.1 so we can have a chance to use extensions for Gnome on Mageia 8
According to upstream [1]: "Please note that chrome-gnome-shell package is now renamed to gnome-browser-connector." IINM we can ship gnome-browser-connector and the browser extension needs to be installed via Chrome Web Store or Mozilla Add-ons site. Thank you Olivier for the request. And thank you Jani for already having done it! I could not find 'chrome-gnome-shell' in Cauldron, but already the re-named 'gnome-browser-connector'. OK to assign the bug to you? If not - to whom?

The bug is for mga8. Reassigning to bugsquad who can judge what to do for stable release.

This bug should be tagged critical for Cauldron users, since the lack of a chrome-gnome-shell/gnome-browser-connector version in the Cauldron repositories results in Cauldron users not being able to install GNOME because of unmet dependencies.

UPDATE: There IS a version of gnome-browser-connector for Cauldron, but I cannot install it, since gnome-shell is required, but gnome-shell still points to chrome-gnome-shell as its dependency, resulting in dependency hell and unmet dependencies for Cauldron users.

Wally fixed that the day after you wrote that, with gnome-browser-connector-42.0-3.mga9, it should install fine in cauldron now. Reassigning. We can't judge that, it's the full packagers who are supposed to know and understand all the ins and outs of our update policy and so on and the maintainers who are supposed to know how a software works. I don't even use this stuff. Going by https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Updates_policy#Version_Policy, and from how I understood this report, I think that "Software that is version-bound to an online service (games, virus scanners?) and will only work with the latest version." applies and that it would thus be Okay to push new gnome-browser-connector as an update for chrome-gnome-shell. But maybe I misunderstood what this software does. @ Olivier You're a full packager yourself, do you mind building gnome-browser-connector locally for yourself in Mageia 8 to check how well that goes and then report back how well it installs and works? If that's all good, but there are doubts about the updates policy, then, if wally agrees, I suggest pushing it to backports.
Feel free to do whatever wanted/needed, nobody owns gnome-browser-connector nowadays.
