Description S.Boré 2022-06-15 11:40:48 CEST
Description of problem:
Hello,
The Nvidia Current package description indicates support for 665 cards and later. However, the last driver allowing this support is the 470. From the 510, the cards of the 6XX, 7XX etc etc series are no longer supported (i.e. a very large number of cards still available on the market).
Since the performance of the new driver is not yet optimal for these cards, which are owned by many users, is it possible to keep the 470 version available?
Thanks.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):All releases

How reproducible:
Install current Driver with a Nvidia Card 7XX series.

Translation errors :

"Since the performance of the new driver is not yet optimal for these cards"

Since the performance of the Nouveau driver is not yet optimal for these cards.

What is your question or request in particular? As i can see there are no efforts to drop any driver in Mageia 9. In Mageia 9 cauldron we have following drivers:

dkms-nvidia390-390.151-2.mga9.nonfree.x86_64.rpm
x11-driver-video-nvidia390-390.151-2.mga9.nonfree.x86_64.rpm

dkms-nvidia470-470.129.06-1.mga9.nonfree.x86_64.rpm
x11-driver-video-nvidia470-470.129.06-1.mga9.nonfree.x86_64.rpm

dkms-nvidia-current-510.73.05-1.mga9.nonfree.x86_64.rpm
x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-510.73.05-1.mga9.nonfree.x86_64.rpm

In Mageia 8 the 510 driver series is only available via backports. So the 470 branch is still the main branch for Mageia 8.

Hello,
Thank you for taking time to answer me.
I am thinking of users of Nvidia cards, having used the "current" when installing Mageia 8 (for example), supporting cards of the 7XX series and who will find themselves unable to switch to graphics mode because the latest version of "current" no longer supports these cards.
However, if we consult Mageia AppDB:
x11-driver-video-nvidia-current : NVIDIA proprietary X.org driver and libraries for GeForce 635 and later cards
However, the latest version of the Nvidia driver (510) no longer supports these cards.
So the list of correspondence between hardware and drivers is, I think, to be modified.

Severity: normal => critical

Thank you very much for the precision.
Will the 470 version remain present under Mageia 8 and under Mageia 9?

Thats not right. If you install Mageia 8 and do an full update, using nvidia-current, you will get the 470 series as latest driver, except:

- you have backports willingly enabled
- you have backports in your repos and are hit by bug 29830

The 510 driver series was only added to backports to support actual graphic adapters like RTX 3050 (see also https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=14555&p=85561&hilit=3080#p85561)

Im dropping again the severity because of following reasons:
- no plans to drop 470 driver support in Mageia 8
- no issue with 6xx/7xx graphic cards with 470 driver series
- no issues with modern graphic cards with 510 driver series from backports
- only a minor description "issue" between 470/510 drivers
..

Severity: critical => normal

Comment 7 S.Boré 2022-06-15 18:18:59 CEST
Do you know if the 470 driver will also be present in mageia 9? Because there are a lot of bug fixes and improvements compared to the old 390.
Regarding the severity, yes I'm sorry, unfortunately I opened the ticket quite quickly.

Thanks for the link.

Please see my comment 2. We have 390, 470 and 510 in Mageia 9 cauldron. As long as there are no compatibility issues none of them should/will be dropped.

If I understand correctly, there is no problem about us supporting hardware.
- but *users need to find it!* ;)

§ the description for the 510 driver need to be corrected to not list incompatible cards, 6XX, 7XX etc etc series not supported by this driver.

§ also check/correct info for 470 driver that it do not support newer cards (state better than "newer cards"). (For mga8 optionally in package summary (as seen in drakrpm) tell to check 510 in backports for later cards.)

IMO, it is enough to have this information updated in next updates

That's exactly it! Thanks ! :)

The hardware support is good, just "modify" the indications.

The 47X.XX series drivers will be the last to support the Kepler architecture:
