Description of problem: Building rpm packages since the last update of file( file-5.42-1.mga9 ) fails with complains like: " extracting debug info from / /usr/bin/debugedit: Failed to open input file '/': Is a directory " Reverting to version file-5.41-4.mga9 fixes the issue. Regards.

We've restored file-5.41-4 and it should be available on the mirrors soon. To downgrade, use this command: urpmi --downgrade file lib64magic1 python3-file-magic

Thank you Aurelian for the report; Jani for the pointer, and Stig for the helpful advice. Aurelian: please report back after the downgrade.

Sorry, for late replay. Downgrade went smooth and I haven't noticed any issues related to "file" rpms on the mirrors I use. This report may be closed as the building issue is solved, or it may be kept open until a working update/upgrade of "file" package is pushed. Regardless, this is the official track of this bug: https://bugs.astron.com/view.php?id=358

Leaving it open because upstream didn't release a fixed version, yet.

Summary: cannot build rpm packages with the latest version(5.42) of file rpm => file 5.42 breaks rpm package builds
I've added the patch from https://bugs.astron.com/view.php?id=358 and tested it locally. It worked as expected for me, but please let me know if anything is still broken.
The latest loaded version("file-5.42-1.mga9") works fine for me too. Regards.
