Description Marc Krämer 2022-05-05 15:04:21 CEST
install virtualbox, run as root VirtualBox and create a network adapter (does not work as user).
/dev/vboxnetctl
and
/dev/vboxnet0
exists.

Reboot.
This will hang for a while, since /dev/vboxnet0 is not present and network.service tries to init network for it.

after boot, you can see /dev/vboxnetctl is present, but /dev/vboxnet0 is still missing. This will fail to start any vbox maschine using Host-Only-Network.

Comment 1 Marc Krämer 2022-05-05 15:11:50 CEST
sorry, I've to correct myself - /dev/vboxnet0 never exists - but after running VirtualBox as root and changing the network device (e.g. enable dhcp) the device is present in network (ifconfig).

ifup still complains about the missing device
/dev/vboxnet0
