Description of problem: I installed Steam on Mageia 9 Cauldron and once I try to play some games on steam it breaks plasma 5 and it sends me to the logon screen. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 5.16.18-desktop-1.mga9 Plasma 5.23.4-2.mga9 How reproducible: Install Mageia 9 with net install. Install Steam Install Supertux from stream store Sometimes it breaks on the beginning and sometimes when trying to configure language for example. Other games also do the same, like Firestone Idle RPM (Free linux game) I installed Supertux2 from mageia package and it also does the same.
I have an idea that Steam is one of those packages which require 32-bit repositories to be enabled when it is installed. Did you do this? As for Supertux2, it is not visible on Mageia 8; the straight 'supertux' pkg does not seem to be related to Steam.

Hello Lewis, I always install 32bit repositories. I tested on both Mageia 8 and 9 since since I tough it could be a cauldron problem but it seems the problem is not mageia related. I tried with another distro and the same happens. SuperTux 2 sometimes it crashes and it takes me to the logon screen, same thing with ubuntu. I tried Supertux 2 from Steam and it also does the same so I will report this to Supertux 2 developer. But, I wonder it this could be a KDE Plasma 5 problem since many native Linux Games on Steam also give problems, for example "Forced", this one resets my PC, "Vertex" only music is playing but no video. Now, here comes the funny part. I changed the compatibility option to use proton windows versions of both SuperTux 2 and Forced instead of Linux native versions and they all work fine. Could this be a Plasma 5 problem? X11? I tested this on a Dual Core Intel Processor with intel GPU, this is suppose to be enough for supertux 2 as sell as Forced. This is a PC is for a 10 year old child. Games that worked using proton with no problems are: Supertux 2 Forced Among Us Pacman Championship DX MapleStory And More I guess the solution right now is to use proton when a native linux game gives me problems. I plant to make the same test on a Ryzen 3000 PC.. Regards
Thank you for all your trials and the 'proton' solution you found. > Could this be a Plasma 5 problem? The best way to test this is to try with another desktop. I am not suggesting that you do that in this case. > I plant to make the same test on a Ryzen 3000 PC Please do report back. CC'ing Rémi who is our games man, for info. After the further info, I think of closing the bug 'works for me' - if it does!

It sounds like a GPU problem, either in the drivers, or outright hardware failure, that would cause the GPU drivers to crash while playing those games. As Plasma uses the GPU drivers too (at least by default if the compositor is enabled), it also crashes and sends you back to the login screen. This might actually be the whole of X11 crashing actually. It's likely that you'd get similar "crash to login" with other DEs too, the problem is typically that the graphics stack enters an unrecoverable state which leads either to X11 crashing, or possibly could lead to kernel panic. I would suggest checking `dmesg` and `journalctl -b` for potential error messages related to the GPU (mentioning Mesa, Intel, i965, Iris, OpenGL, DRM, etc.). And monitor the temperature if the system has sensors, as it might be overheating. All in all this is likely not something easy to debug or fixable from the Mageia side, as it's (most likely) not related to packaging. It *could* be a bug in the kernel or Mesa for this specific hardware though, if it's not hardware failure. In that case it could be reported to kernel / Mesa.
BTW you could test the `supertux` package that Lewis mentioned, to see if it crashes like the Steam version. It can also be that Steam itself adds another layer of complexity which can trigger bugs in the drivers. I actually experienced crashes in OpenGL 2.1 games in Steam a while ago due to a Mesa bug: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/8122 (that specific bug has been fixed since Mesa 21.3) You can try to disable the Steam overlay in the Steam settings to see if that helps. The overlay injects itself in the OpenGL state and that's a hack worth bypassing if it can be the source of problems.
Thanks for your instant comments, in the light of which can you Ezequiel post the output of $ inxi -MSGxx to show what system & graphics you have.
@ ZekeMX There were some suggestions / requests for more information in the comments above.

Hello Sorry for the delayed response. It seems to be a Desktop Problem and not a Mageia Problem. I swapped the SSD from another Desktop and Mageia ended on an AMD Ryzen 5 and it works great. All games work without any crashes. The other one that crashed with Mageia Ended having Windows 10 with Steam. Supertux for windows as well as Steam game called FORCED and others rebooted the computer... Windows came even worst.. This PC is Low Profile PC I wanted to use for my kids with lowend games but it seems the GPU is not powerful enough. I will use this a small file server with mageia... ;-) If you guys still want to know something else on this PC with mageia for reference please let me know... like inxi -MSGxx output for example. Regards
As this bug was related to bad/weak hardware (even windows crashed) and Mageia is no longer installed on it...we can close this as FIXED (even if INVALID would suit this one better).
