Description David Walser 2022-03-07 17:25:53 CET
VLC 3.0.17 has been released today (March 7):
https://www.videolan.org/vlc/releases/3.0.17.html
https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/raw/3.0.x/NEWS

This appears to just be a bugfix release, although infinite loop and crash fixes can be security fixes.
Comment 1 David Walser 2022-03-07 18:51:07 CET
Update checked into SVN. Will push later after some higher priority builds. Saving advisory and package list for later.

Note that there are core and tainted builds.

Advisory:
--------------------------------------------------

The vlc package has been updated to version 3.0.17, fixing several bugs. See
the upstream release announcements and NEWS file for details.

Package pushed to the build system. Again, note that there are core and tainted builds. Advisory and package list in Comment 1.

mga8, x86_64

Tainted version installed here. Made sure that the plugins were up-to-date and updated the whole list.
$ rpm -q vlc
vlc-3.0.17-1.mga8.tainted

There are very few of the plugins that I know how to test but vlc works well generally with pulseaudio, svlc for theme, XML channel list for TV input, subtitles work, and the input stream can be recorded. Various audio formats work OK; FLAC, Matroska, WAV, OGG, MP3. MP4, FLV, TS OK. A simple m3u file was accepted as a playlist.

The terminal log showed this at one point:
[00007f6de4c19d00] avcodec decoder: Using NVIDIA VDPAU Driver Shared Library 470.94 Mon Dec 6 22:29:44 UTC 2021 for hardware decoding

No regressions noted anyway.

Shall look for another system with the non-tainted version installed.

MGA 64 XFCE

Updated with QA repo and rpms:

lib64vlc5 3.0.17 1.mga8 x86_64
lib64vlccore9 3.0.17 1.mga8 x86_64
vlc 3.0.17 1.mga8 x86_64
vlc-plugin-common 3.0.17 1.mga8 x86_64
vlc-plugin-lua 3.0.17 1.mga8 x86_64
vlc-plugin-opengl 3.0.17 1.mga8 x86_64
vlc-plugin-pulse 3.0.17 1.mga8 x86_64
vlc-plugin-samba 3.0.17 1.mga8 x86_64
vlc-plugin-theora 3.0.17 1.mga8 x86_64
vlc-plugin-vdpau 3.0.17 1.mga8 x86_64

I certainly did not handle the QA tool well because my tainted version was replaced by the normal version.
However, this version works correctly:
Audio playback (mp3) ok
Network stream (web radio) ok
Video (.avi) ok

qarepo has a checkbox to enable checking for the tainted version.
The version number takes precedence over the repo.

Without selecting the checkbox for tainted or if the packager forgets to push
the tainted build -
"vlc-3.0.17-1.mga8" sorts as greater than "vlc-3.0.16-1.mga8.tainted"

If both release and tainted repos are enabled and both repos built -
"vlc-3.0.17-1.mga8.tainted" sorts as greater than "vlc-3.0.17-1.mga8".

Adding the ok tag based on the above tests and my own.

Comment 6 Len Lawrence 2022-03-08 22:41:49 CET
Adding my halfpennyworth. Found a partition with the non-tainted version on it and installed all the plugins. Updated successfully.
Ran similar tests to those for the tainted series. Most codecs worked but vlc could not handle dvb-t (on free to air TV). Again, noted no regressions.
