Description of problem: I remember back some years ago a guy named Daniel Nylander here in Sweden made a regional based version of Ubuntu and I was thinking..... Why not take this idea to Mageia as well since we have communities in various countries around the globe? The iso's would be smaller in size and they'd fit into a 4GB USB memory stick as well if needed. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Go to https://www.mageia.org/ 2. Choose region. 3. Download iso. 4. Burn the iso to a USB stick or to a CD/DVD. 5. Boot the installer which will have all the languages for the downloaded region.
I realize that this will create more work, but it's a thrilling idea.
Are there actual any distributions which follow this kind of concept? If i look at the provided link it seems that this concept was used a decade ago. I believe this would be an immensive loss of flexibility which we have with our installer (and also for all other distributions out there). The argument about the saved space on an USB-stick is not relly valid. The difference between a 4GB and a 8GB stick are only cents. And a big backdraw would be the massive addidtional amount of work to create ISOs for all languages.
AFAIK no other distro offers this. About the extra work creating the iso, there should be a way to automate it. Jenkins or similar?
We *had* something like that in the past.. Mandrake or Mandriva. Got abandoned. IIRC it was not much lower size, but, importantly, more total work.

To get an understanding of how much more work would be necessary only a small calculation: ATM: 2 ISOs classic installer (32/64bit) -> 27 languages * 2 = 54 ISOs ATM: 1 Live Media Plasma 64bit -> 27 languages * 1 = 27 ISOs ATM: 1 Live Media Gnome 64bit -> 27 languages * 1 = 27 ISOs ATM: 2 Live Media XFCE 32/64bit -> 27 languages * 2 = 54 ISOs This all needs QA and testing. And if there is anything wrong with the images and they have to be redone....hossa! I also don't get the real intention behind it. There wouldn't be any better locale support in any of the ISOs. You only strip them down to one language and thats it. So there is no advantage of doing this.
Not going to happend. We had split isos for Mageia 1 and 2 and retired them after that it after as the pain vs gain was not worth it..., not to mention the huge waste of mirror space...
