Description Kristoffer Grundström 2022-02-04 22:25:21 CET
Description of problem: I don't know specifically what triggers this, but every now and then my MATE desktop gets reloaded as I see the bottom panel disappearing and reappearing again as if there's a crash. I have no clue as to what causes this.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 1.24.1

How reproducible: Every now and then.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install MATE desktop.
2. Login to MATE.
3. Change theme to BlackMATE
4. Use Firefox and surf as usual.
5. Sometimes the panel at the bottom just reloads.

I suspect that mate-panel is the cause, but I'm definitely not sure.

Is there anything logged in system log?

You mention theme BlackMate. Do the problem appear with default theme?

What's the easiest fastest way to restore to the standard theme without reinstalling the system?

I imagine by going the same path you used: System-Preferences-Appearance etc-Appearance. In my case, the first item is highlighted, but in an italic font; I presume this is the default (unsure of the exact translation of the caption), I have no wish to change it!
Are you saying that a default choice no longer shows after you have changed to a different theme? If not, you can certainly chose another theme that pleases you better.

When this happens, does the desktop disappear then re-appear; or just the panel? Does any ongoing application get interrupted?

It's just the panel that reappears/reloads. Changing the title of this bug.

Thank you for this important clarification.
It is important to know whether this visual occurence actually causes any disruption. You do not say. It may be routine normal behaviour. If no functional interference, we can call it 'academic'.

If you notice it again, note the time, and then look at the system journal around that time (should be the end, of course) for any clues:
 $ journalctl -b
and if you see anything suspicious, post that bit of the displayed journal.

Affirmative.

I think we are going to have to see whether this still happens with newly released Mageia 9.
Mate is commonly used, and we have no other similar reports.

Does it still happen with Mageia 9?
