Comment 2 Dave Hodgins 2021-12-17 22:59:15 CET
I have one vb install, m8 x86_64 that's giving me problems. Installed the updates
under a snapshot, ran into a large number of ext4 errors on reboot into the
new kernel. Reverted the snapshot, booted cleanly, reinstalled the updates.
After rebooting into the test kernel, now dmesg shows ...

[ 302.815690] [drm:vmw_msg_ioctl [vmwgfx]] *ERROR* Failed to open channel.

I'll try fixing the ext4 errors by booting a live iso in the vb guest.

The host system dmesg is not showing any errors. df and df -i show neither
the host or guest are out of space or inodes.

The msg "Running outdated vboxsf module without support for the 'tag' option?"
looks like it may be a problem, though it doesn't seem likely to impact the
ext4 system. The guest / file system is mounted as
/dev/sda1 on / type ext4 (rw,relatime)

Comment 4 Dave Hodgins 2021-12-17 23:34:32 CET
Fixing the ext4 errors doesn't help. Reverting the updates allows booting
cleanly. Reinstalling the updates recreates the problem.

On my laptop, everything is ok. The only difference related to storage in the
vb settings between the laptop and the desktop (where it's failing), is that
the host where the vb guest is failing has in the guest storage settings
the vdi file attached to the ide controller, type PIIX4, with the
"Use Host I/O Cache" selected.
On the laptop, the guest vdi file is attached to the sata controller, type ACHI,
port count 2, and does not have the use host i/o cache selected.

The guest that's failing is running the 5.15.6-desktop-2 when the updates are
being installed.

None of the storage settings have been changed recently.
Comment 5 Dave Hodgins 2021-12-17 23:52:33 CET
After recreating the problem, restored/deleted the snapshot, turned off
"Use Host I/O Cache", created a new snapshot, installed the updates again,
and booted cleanly into the new kernel in the guest.

So it looks like "Use Host I/O Cache" for a vb guest is a problem now.

I wonder if this is due to the hardening / security fixes for fd and signal handling... if so it will need a fix on vbox side...

did the host have 5.15.10 too ? if so, does it change anything for the guest if you run older kernel on the host ?

type: security
subject: Updated kernel packages fix security vulnerabilities

   core:
     - kernel-5.15.10-1.mga8

description: |
This kernel update is based on upstream 5.15.10 and fixes atleast the
  following security issues:

A read-after-free memory flaw was found in the Linux kernel's garbage
collection for Unix domain socket file handlers in the way users call
close() and fget() simultaneously and can potentially trigger a race
condition. This flaw allows a local user to crash the system or escalate
their privileges on the system (CVE-2021-4083).

An attacker can access kernel memory bypassing valid buffer boundaries by
exploiting implementation of control request handlers in the following usb
gadgets - rndis, hid, uac1, uac1_legacy and uac2. Processing of malicious
control transfer requests with unexpectedly large wLength lacks assurance
that this value does not exceed the buffer size. Due to this fact one is
capable of reading and/or writing (depending on particular case) up to 65k
of kernel memory. Devices implementing affected usb device gadget classes
may be affected by buffer overflow vulnerabilities resulting in information
disclosure, denial of service or execution of arbitrary code in kernel
  context (CVE-2021-39685).

In the Linux kernel through 5.15.2, hw_atl_utils_fw_rpc_wait in drivers/net/
ethernet/aquantia/atlantic/hw_atl/hw_atl_utils.c allows an attacker (who can
introduce a crafted device) to trigger an out-of-bounds write via a crafted
  length value (CVE-2021-43975).

In addition to the upstream changes, we also have added the following fixes:
  - [Bug 29704] Kernel 5.15.4 + Nouveau = flickering Plasma DE
  - [Bug 29711] Firefox under plasma doesn't display gui with kernel 5.15.4
    and other gui issues.
  - [Bug 29760] Kernel 5.15.x breaks bluetooth on Lifebook A555
  - Add AHCI support for ASM1062+JBM575 cards
  - fget: clarify and improve __fget_files() implementation
  - drm/i915/gen11: Moving WAs to icl_gt_workarounds_init()
  - HID: holtek: fix mouse probing
  - iwlwifi: add new killer devices to the driver
  - iwlwifi: add new device id 7F70
  - iwlwifi: pcie: fix killer name matching for AX200
  - iwlwifi: pcie: remove two duplicate PNJ device entries
  - iwlwifi: add missing entries for Gf4 with So and SoF
  - iwlwifi: swap 1650i and 1650s killer struct names
  - iwlwifi: add new Qu-Hr device
  - iwlwifi: add new ax1650 killer device
  - rtw88: 8821c: support RFE type4 wifi NIC
  - rtw88: 8821c: correct 2.4G tx power for type 2/4 NIC
  - rtw88: 8821c: disable the ASPM of RTL8821CE as it causes systems to hang

Comment 13 Dave Hodgins 2021-12-18 21:34:40 CET
Now I can't seem to recreate the problem.
Rebooted the host with kernel-desktop-5.15.6-2.mga8-1-1.mga8,
and didn't recreate the problem following what I wrote in comment 4.

Rebooted the host back to kernel-server-5.15.10-1.mga8-1-1.mga8,
and tested again, but did not recreate the problem.

Obviously I changed something, but I don't know what. Very frustrating.

Hardware: My workstation "svarten": Mainboard: Sabertooth P67, CPU: i7-3770, RAM 16G, GM107 [GeForce GTX 750] using nvidia-current; GeForce 635 series and later, 4k display. Disk&Filesystem: SSD with /boot/EFI and ext4 /boot, LUKS{LVM {swap, ext4 /home & / } and a spinner at /mnt/spinner

Tested: Plasma desktop; using Thunderbird, LibreOffice, Ktorrent, Nextcloud client, printing, Firefox ESR, flatpak Firefox, flatpak Spotify, java program FriBOK, ...
Stress test: While working with other things BOINC use all cores to 100%, videos do not stutter in Chromium, nor Firefox ESR but do in flatpak version.
VirtualBox: Launched my usual MSW7pro-64, tests OK: bidirectional clipboard, shared folders write protected and not, USB2 memory stick read&write (using upstream extension pack), drag file from Dolphin to Windows Explorer, Windows update, video playing in Firefox and Chrome while CPU is heavily loaded.

Kernel: 5.15.10-desktop-1.mga8 x86_64 running well on
Quad Core Intel Core i7-4790 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970.
However although lsusb shows the bluetooth dongle neither blueman nor bluetoothctl can see it. On login rfkill pops up - accepts an OK from root - but rfkill does not list any hci devices.

Comment 21 Len Lawrence 2021-12-19 12:35:05 CET
Had a look at the driver settings using harddrake2 and the only parameter with a value was 'reset' = true.
dmesg shows this:
134.709590] usb 2-12: USB disconnect, device number 8
[ 142.487957] usb 2-12: new full-speed USB device number 9 using xhci_hcd
[ 142.616455] usb 2-12: New USB device found, idVendor=0b05, idProduct=17cb, bcdDevice= 1.12
[ 142.616458] usb 2-12: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[ 142.616459] usb 2-12: Product: BCM20702A0
[ 142.616460] usb 2-12: Manufacturer: Broadcom Corp
[ 142.616460] usb 2-12: SerialNumber: 5CF3708BAA4A
[ 142.643245] btusb: `true' invalid for parameter `reset'

So, a check on the same type of hardware on another machine where bluetooth is working with an earlier kernel showed a blank for the 'reset' parameter. Changed the driver option on the problem machine but do not know if that will survive a reboot. Trying that.
Comment 22 Len Lawrence 2021-12-19 12:43:59 CET
Success. After the reboot the bluetooth icon came up in the Mate panel and the previous connection to a portable speaker was established as soon as it was switched on.

Thanks for your guidance Thomas. Does this mean that something needs to be changed in the kernel?
Comment 23 Len Lawrence 2021-12-19 12:45:26 CET
Or, it might be a firmware thing - have not installed the new package yet.

HP Probook 6550b, i3, Intel graphics, Intel wifi, 64-bit Plasma system.

Updated mesa, libdrm, and nonfree firmwares first, with no issues, then went after this kernel. No installation issues here, either.

After reboot, wifi came up normally, as did the desktop. Firefox, Thunderbird both work normally. Started a Windows 7 guest in VirtualBox, and except for a complaint that anti-malware definitions needed updating, there was no problem there, either.
