Moved to a rarely maintained partition on this machine to install the desktop and server kernels. 10-Core Intel Core i9-7900X NVIDIA GP102 [GeForce GTX 1080 Ti] driver: nvidia v: 470.86 Intel Ethernet I219-V driver: e1000e First try with server kernel. Display driver change - switched to nouveau. That was unexpected. Tried the desktop kernel and that booted without nvidia also. I had not tried to enable the nvidia driver, so that is OK, but the following ominous messages appear right at the start of the reboot process now. Picked them out of dmesg: [ 5.316368] usb usb3-port1: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad? [ 6.268370] usb usb3-port1: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad? [ 6.268431] usb usb3-port1: unable to enumerate USB device "Ominous" because there was a recent series of problems which were always accompanied by those words on each reboot. The major problems were lack of nvidia graphics and damage to the ESR partition and I still do not know what caused either of those. My guess was either memory defects or a bad patch on the systems SSD but after several re-installations the problems vanished. Moving to another machine to continue testing.
Still on the problem machine. Used lsusb to get a handle on the USB issue. There was an external USB2.0 drive plugged into an extension from a USB2.0 port but the extension is plain USB1.0 I think. Removing the drive made no difference but unplugging the extension removed the "bad cable" query. Installing the nvidia driver succeeded after that. A puzzle.

The "bad usb cable?" message came back whenever the nvidia graphics driver was not working. Two or three attempts to re-establish nvidia graphics for the desktop. Logging out with the desktop kernel eventually failed with a loop "nvidia probe was not called for ....". Crash reboot at that point and the nvidia driver became available and the "bad cable" message vanished. Cannot figure out what is going on but Mate is running fine with the desktop kernel and nvidia.
(In reply to Len Lawrence from comment #5) > Continuing from comment 4: > Server and desktop kernels working but the nvidia graphics driver installed > with drakx11 fails to build for the server kernel. is kernel-server-devel-5.15.4-1.mga8-1-1.mga8 installed ?
Well spotted Thomas. In fact, no. Must have been a cut and paste error. On it.
That fixed the nvidia driver for the server kernel. The desktop and virtualbox function normally.

What's the rush to get this pushed? Also, what's happening with the systemd update?
An update for this issue has been pushed to the Mageia Updates repository. https://advisories.mageia.org/MGAA-2021-0222.html
Resolution: (none) => FIXEDStatus: NEW => RESOLVED
I dont consider this "rushed" as 5.15 series started early testing on Nov 13th, so testing of 5.15 series has been happening for ~2 weeks... and no reported issues so far, neither in Mga8 or in Cauldron... as for systemd, it has no bearing on this report, I will assign it when I'm sure I have all bits I want in it...
MGA8-64, AMD APU, Laptop Installed kernel, cpupower, etc. Running into an issue during shutdown. The system seems to hang and not fully power off. Same with suspend. I'll attach the latest journal for shutdown, to me it doesn't say much.
Created attachment 13004 [details] journal of start and stop and start apu laptop The system seems to not fully power down on shutdown. I also tried halt --p with same hanging issue. Suspend doing the same. Let me know what else you need.
