Description of problem: Mageia 8 , Dell XPS 12 9310. Plasma with sddm. I boot up and the splash screen comes up. If flashes back to the console 1 (with two lines of text which I have not been able to read ) and then to the sddm logon screen. After about 2 or 3 sec it flashes back to the console with a lot more text and then after about a second to the sddm logon, and I can then logon. If I boot up with nosplash, I get the console displayed of course, and finally the sddm logon screen comes up, but 2-3 sec later it flashes back to the console, and then to the sddm logon screen. This is really annoying. Just waiting is an option, but that does not alter the annoyance. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
Please attach a journal; output of # journalctl -b after booting to desktop.

Thanks. Assigning to sddm package maintainer to have a look. Have you tried other display managers?

No I have not tried other display managers.
Ijust tried lightdm. Same behaviour. The second console actually shows the console login for a second before it finally shows the login screen permanantly. So, the boot shows the boot splash screen (bubbling pot), it shows the console messages ( a cou;el of them) for about 3 sec, then it shows the login screen ( either sddm or lightdm, depending on which I chose) for about 5 sec, then it shows the console text login for a second, and then finally the sddm or lightdm login screen onto which you can actually login. So, it is not just sddm.
This will happen if an error message with a very high severity level is written to the system log before you log in. Use 'journalctl -b -p 2' to check for any critical error messages.

That journalctl command gives no output. sudo journalctl -b -p 2 -- Logs begin at Wed 2021-10-13 06:12:27 CDT, end at Sun 2021-10-24 20:44:18 CDT. -- -- No entries -- And this behaviour happens on every boot, whether I use sddm of lightdm.
